Hello all you experts, I am in need of a new DVD player. But which current one (still being sold new) is the best?
I am wondering if there is one you would suggest or avoid or if there is anything else that would be good to know for a newbie like me?

Thanks!

Do you really mean DVD?

Or Blu-ray?

I don't think any name brand still has one. Last I saw them...there were stacks upon stacks at grocery stores for $25.

However if you want a good used one...

I got several.

I'm no expert and I don't know which is the best current DVD player. However, Amazon has DVD players from Samsung and Sony, both of whom have long and respectable track records. You're unlikely to go wrong with either of those companies.

My longest-serving player is from AWA (a budget European brand). I got it many years ago and it rarely skips a beat. My other player is a Pioneer brand one, and I've practically no issues with that either.

I would suggest a cheap, name-brand blu-ray player, even if you have no interest in buying blu-ray discs. I have a basic Sony model and its DVD upscaling is excellent.

The reason I want a DVD player is because from what I can understand not all DVD's look great on a blu-ray player. Might have something to do with upscaling.

I will get a blu-ray player as well though.

Thanks for your suggestions.

You aren't finding a "new one".

Any of the Denon 19XX/29XX.
Onkyo 50X/Integra DPS 6.X

Oppo

Pioneer 420 is an excellent choice along with the Elite 48/58.

Never ever heard that before. Not my experience, that's for sure.

A lot of BD players(bargain bin to $150...MSRP) can't format DVD correctly.

Not to mention the scaling isn't as good as a more expensive DVD player.

Now...if you are talking a $300+ BD player, those will still have settings to properly display DVD. I've actually seen a Samsung that could only produce a full screen 1080P from a DVD. Meaning a 2:40 DVD was blown up top/bottom so the side 20%, each, was off the screen. There is no setting for "through"...so to speak. It assumes all DVD are 4:3 pan & scan.

But many cases...

An Oppo 970(routinely $100 on eBay) paired with a
