67th Annual Emmy Awards Nominations (1 Viewer)

The fact that Nick Offerman has gone the entire run of "Parks & Recreation" without being nominated for his iconic role as Ron Swanson is criminal, and the continued love for "Modern Family" now borders on inexplicable, but otherwise there is a whole lot to like in these nominations, which are in my judgment the best slate in years. I was particularly gratified to see Tatiana Maslany finally get a Best Actress nomination for her incredible performances on "Orphan Black". Also really happy to see "Parks & Recreation" finally get a Best Comedy Series nom for its swan song season.

Biggest snubs outside Nick Offerman: "Outlander" getting completely shut out in major categories, the lack of love all around for the final season of "Justified".

Once again, no nomination for The Good Wife and its star didn't get nominated after winning last year repeating the same series of events that happened after she won during season two and not being nominated for season three.


Very upset that David Suchet didn't merit a nomination after playing the definitive Hercule Poirot for twenty-five years even though the last TV-film did get nominated.


I have no problem with the Modern Family nominations. Six years in and it still makes me laugh. The nominations for the cast have thinned out to the two best performers in the cast.

It's nice to see Bob Odenkirk and Jeff Daniels get some recognition but I hope Jon Hamm can finally win.


I'm glad to see Tim Van Patten get a much deserved nomination for directing the Boardwalk Empire finale. Though it highlights how ridiculous it is that the series didn't get nominated when it was better than 2/3 of the shows that did get a nom.


Since it was the best comedy on TV for 6 of its 7 years, I didn't even realize that it was Parks And Recreation's first nomination for Best Comedy.


Other insane omissions are Nick Offerman and The Americans (both the show and its cast).

As phenomenal as Julianna Margulies is, she just won last year and I'm not sure who I would have bumped in arguably TV's most competitive category. On the other hand, the show itself failing to get a Best Drama Series nomination for the second year running while "Downton Abbey" continues to get rubberstamped by the TV academy is more than a little infuriating.

I've got to believe that it's as close as it can get to his year.

Actually, its second. The abbreviated 16-episode third season, still one of the best single seasons of television ever made, also nabbed a Best Comedy Series nomination. It lost to the second of "Modern Family's" five consequential series wins (a major contributor to my frustration with the Emmys' reflexive love for that series).

Biggest omissions (for me)...


True Detective, Fargo, and Eva Green for Penny Dreadful. But that is always the way it is with these sorts of things.

They were both nominated/won last year. The eligibility period is June to May so this year's episodes will be up next summer.

Downton Abbey for best drama? Come on Emmys, stop being lazy. Shouldn't have been nominated last year either.

I thought this year for Downton Abbey was better than the previous year, but The Good Wife trumps it with a long season of quality episodes.

I think it can hold its own with the best of them. And I don't get the love for Transparent. It doesn't make me even crack a smile, much less laugh. Four episodes of that and I was done. Even Nurse Jackie did make me laugh a few times per season (though I still think it's more drama than comedy).

I get why so many people love Transparent, but I personally don't love it as much as them. I watch Modern Family, but I always think it's way too conventional to be Emmy-worthy. It can be funny, but it also tends to be lazy-funny and is rarely smart. I've read that the show runners hate each other and only produce their own episodes. That's why the show alternates between 'very good' and 'not that great' episodes. I don't remember which show runner is the good one, but it adds to the perception that it lacks consistency of quality.

What I can't reconcile is whether I'm supposed to be comedically reveling in what shitty narcissistic people the kids grew up to be, or accepting them as somehow justifiably non-shitty, non-narcissistic.


I enjoy it quite a bit more as a black comedy on that front, but I get this nagging sense I'm supposed to be celebrating them just as we're supposed to celebrate Maura, and that's a bridge too far.

Re. Outstanding Dramatic Lead Actress:


Just give it to Tatiana Maslany. No arguments, no nonsense, just give her the damn thing.


She literally plays 6 different people on the same show -- sometimes pretending to play each other -- so goddamn well there are times the sheer insanity of the fact that person and that completely different person are the same goddamn person just leaps out of the TV and smashes me in the face.


That ep in the past season where Cosima is sick and she has to pretend to be Alison giving a speech while simultaneously dealing with her drug-supplier...it's so amazingly great. And because of her performance, you ALWAYS know who you're watching, even when they're dressed the same.


It's incredible.

Seeing "Modern Family" over and over does get a bit old, but it's a very well done show.

Isn't Big Bang filmed in front of an audience? She would have spent the week working on the show and taping before a live audience just like any of the other actors. And that's what the Guest Actor Emmy is all about.

Glad to see the writing nom for the Five-O episode of Better Call Saul and Jonathan Banks nom, mostly for his performance in that episode.
