Hey Guys,

My house is currently being constructed and I have been gathering my HT equipment.

  • Project is Benq W1070
  • Screen (was free) 100" motorised, not sure the brand but will use this until I upgrade to something larger.
I need help finding a receiver and speakers, Ive searched high and low and am still confused.

My room dimensions are 5.4m x 3.5m - The purple is where the lounge will be and the red is the screen.

The projector will be roof mounted.

I will only be using the system to watch movies and tv series, looking for a system that will really make you feel as though you are in the movie.

Due to space, the front speakers and the sub can sit on the ground but I need to find speakers for the rear that can be wall/ceiling mounted.

My budget for the speakers and reciever is $2k

Any further info please let me know, Im open to all and any suggestions!

A system that will "make you feel like you're in the movie" might be hard to achieve for $2k. Might look into used gear, especially the speakers and subwoofer. That said, it's hard to go wrong with a Yamaha receiver. Typically user friendly and reliable.

Shop the 5.1 speaker sets from SVS and Hsu Research. Might squeak in on your budget. They are known for their subwoofers, and their sets include their standalone sub models. Both offer in-home audition, and SVS covers return shipping as well.

As far as the AVR, I concur with the Yamaha recommendation. You don't appear to need the newest model, so a RX-V475, 575, 675 from accessories4less.com should do the trick. A 375 would be very basic, but if the cabling is accessible, you can always upgrade later.

I'm venturing a guess he's not in the US. He used...meters.

Tannoy and Dali both have "beginner sets" that can be upgraded with front tower speakers.

Hey thanks for the replies so far.

Yes I'm not in the states sorry, from Australia.

Screen is 100" and was free so will make a good start, due to the room being smaller I wanted to check how big I could go without it hurting my eyes. But from what I've read I should be able to go up to 120-130.

Having a look into those suggested receivers currently, just the speakers and woofer is my issue being from a rural location I can't easily go and listen to systems. Essentially need x2 front towers, X1 center, x2 wall/roof mountable due to not having space behind the couch and X1 woofer.

Seeing how its only a small room would it be best to by a satellite speaker set? (5.1) It would appear to be enough to fill the entire room.

Room is 12ft x 17ft

You can get by on satellite (I did for a while), but it's nowhere near your original goal of making you feel like you're in the movie. Also, music will sound bad, so don't plan on using the system for listening to just music.

I think you'll be able to put together a decent system for close to 2k (the sub could tip you over).

If the 2k budget is hard, then I suggest skipping the surrounds and maybe even the center, and build up. I split my budget as ~300 for the rcvr, ~1000 for speakers, and ~500 for the sub.
