Too bad this Blu-ray does not have English subtitles. Only promoted as being in Cinerama in the UK.

I guess I am lucky to speak German in this case :)

The colors do bother me in some of these caps, the caps also do look a bit flat.

But look at the detail, this is what 65mm originated material should look like on Blu-ray:

Well Cinerama "presents" is not exactly being in true Cinerama. Nothing in the poster says "IN Cinerama". I've never heard of the film. Where is this Blu-ray available?

Even if I spoke German, I still wouldn't buy it because I never watch movies with dubs.

Maybe someone like Cohen has picked it up for release?

This should probably be in International Blu rays, but... According to Amazon.de, the Blu ray is REGION Free, with two language tracks: the original French & a German dub. Subtitles are only in German. No aspect ratio is given on the Amazon page. Anyway, I'm also pasting a link, even though there is one above, as this one seems to be different.

I discovered a trailer on the Amazon.de site. It's in German, and I think the actors spoke in either French or Italian, so nothing matches. But it does give one an idea of what the film is about. It seems similar to THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER or THE PRISONER OF ZENDA. Alain Delon plays two roles, a dashing revolutionary & an aristocratic fop. Both characters are on screen simultaneously, so they may be twins. According to the trailer, the film was shot in 70mm. And Amazon.de states that the Blu is mastered in 4k, so it should look fabulous.

The Pacifist & Leftist French journalist, Henri Jeanson, wrote the dialogue, so perhaps the film isn't simply a swashbuckler.

I also discovered a Wikipedia page which I have pasted below. (Yes. Delon plays twins in the film & the Black Tulip is similar to Zorro)

Why is that? You could choose German subs with the original French soundtrack.

As I am learning German, I'm tempted. Either the dubbed German or the German subtitles because they talk so damn quick!!

Good practise I think.

Then it may be an idea to go for it :) I will get the Blu-ray in a day or two and report back here, the detail definitely seems to be outstanding.

THE BLACK TULIP was indeed shown on the Coliseum's huge Cinerama screen, in 1965. That same year LA FAYETTE and THE FLAMING YEARS were shown at the Coliseum in Cinerama. i decided at the time not to go to see them but now wish i had as the English language versions have disappeared. From what I recall, reviews were not good for any of them and none of them played for very long. I understand that all three were only shown in Cinerama in London.

Yes, How the West Was Won was the last true 3-panel Cinerama title. All Cinerama titles after that were 70mm.

Those three titles only played at the Coliseum for about 5 to 8 weeks each. The UK theatres that were not Cinerama equiped might have used the following poster.

Although I missed out with Tulip, I did see the other two with school friends. La Fayette was partly subtitled and then dubbed which was a bit of a mix. Watching subtitles in Cinerama was a bit like a tennis match but with your head going up and down as well as side to side.

I have a small poster for it hanging in my office,.

The Flaming Years was Russia's first 70mm and all I can recall is the fountains at the beginning with the sound moving across the screen in glorious 6 Track stereo.

I didn't think that Tulip got a general release so surprised to see the poster with its "shown in Cinerama " endorsement Great fun.

I know that when the Casino closed as a cinema in 1974 Cinerama stored a lot of stuff at the back of the ABC Shaftesbury Ave including a 70mm print of La Fayette and various other 70mm prints I then was told it all disappeared.

I also saw The Flaming Years at the NFT in the 80,s I know I did not use the headphones as I wanted to hear the 6 track stereo.

I'm reminded of another film which was shown only in London in Cinerama; RUN, RUN, JOE (1974), which I had the misfortune to see and which was a 70mm blowup from 35mm. Produced by Carlo Ponti and made in Italy this comedy/thriller lacked both comedy and thrills and was one of the most tedious films I've ever sat through. Understandably, I think it was the last film to open in London as a Cinerama film.

It played for 4 weeks at the London Casino.
