The second season starts on Sunday.

Due to the heights that the first season hit, I think this new season will probably have the worst case of "It's Not As Good As Last Season-itis" to ever happen to a TV show. And god help them if they did something different this year & took a creative risks rather than just lazily copying the first season because they will really be ripped to pieces by viewers and critics.

However it turns out its gotta be better than most of what passes for entertainment on tv these days.

If Season Two doesn't include the same type of nonsense that wasted a significant portion on Harrelson's cop's domestic issues and the case is compelling, it should have no trouble being a better season.

I have some trepidation, as the historical/occult aspect that the author originally planned to shape the season around has been scrapped.

Don't know that another straightforward procedural is the best use of his talents, or the platform.

Will watch hoping for the best, though.

I thought season one was flawless, from the directing to the acting to the music. I agree with Travis that the comparisons will inevitably be "not as good blah blah blah."

Harrelson's unfaithful cop story line was tripe. And sooooooooooo cliched. And ssssssssssssssssoooooooooooo boring.

Far from flawless season in my eyes.

Based on this and your posts in the Orphan Black thread, you've got extremely high standards. That plot might have taken up 15 minutes of the 8 hours of screen time so I don't know if it was particularly damaging to the show. Not to mention that it was done to start laying down story to show how both guys' personal lives eventually go in the toilet.

Matter of opinion as people disagree about this stuff all the time.

My only complaint about the first season was the rather uninspired standard cliché finale it came back to, otherwise I found it extremely compelling and rewarding entertainment for television and set my hopes high for another great season (but I've heard to ease up with those expectations a bit- possible sophomore slump).

I thought the finale was 100% earned. Loved it.

As Crawdaddy always likes to point out, different strokes. . . :)

Indeed. I liked the finale quite a bit. The journey to get there - for large stretches - not so much.

So any thoughts on the season two premiere?
I dug it as a beginning of a story but like most heavily serialized shows, it's nearly impossible to judge how good or bad it is after one show. The characters and actors are all interesting.

Call me crazy but I think Colin Farrell went overboard when he 'talked' to the kid about bullying.

I thought it was a great opener. The main characters are all very interesting and layered. A fantastic script. The dialog adds dimension to each actor skilfully -- it unfolds with each line they deliver. The narrative is dense yet economical. The core of each character is laid out in the first minute they are on screen and then turns 180 later on (Farrell: loving father turned alcoholic psychopath; Kitsch: dedicated cop turned PTSD-addled war veteran etc). McAdams' character is particularly complex. Nice to see Vaughn in a dramatic role.

I had a pretty negative immediate reaction to the title track, what did you guys think?
It was different but I didn't really dig the first season's song until a few episodes in either. I'm assuming the new song is by the great Leonard Cohen so I'll probably be used to it in a couple of episodes. Much like how I always hated the new 'Way Down In The Hole' at the beginning of each season of The Wire but loved it by the end.

I wasn't particularly fond of it either, but I thought it might take some time to grow on me.

I thought it had some issues that are pretty common to the initial episode of a series that has to setup the players and the story. It jumped around too much for my tastes and it didn't really earn some of the cross cutting between the characters, but I thought it ended strongly and I was never bored. I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

Maybe just a little bit, Travis. ;)
