Truffaut's Mississippi Mermaid is a lovely film, and goes to places viewers may not expect. That's one of its pleasures.

Anything released on Blu-ray by Francois Truffaut should be met with celebration, and Twilight Time's new Blu-ray gets a huge cheer from this quarter.

The only problem with the release comes from MGM, and the master that they've supplied to TT.

To my eye, it appears to be transferred from a dupe neg, and has a softish feel to it, along with the movement that one would expect from multiple analogue generations. Did I mention positive and negative dirt?

Colors are good, but not great. Basically, all image attributes are on the level of okay. Creating something better, may have necessitated a return to French elements, which may not have been readily available, or at least not at a price.

Although I must voice my displeasure with the quality, this film is so important, especially as part of the work left to us by Truffaut, that my recommendation is to overlook the problem, and to buy the disc.

A wonderful film, not to be confused with the also recently released Mississippi Burning, which is also from Twilight Time.

Mississippi Mermaid is basically about someone who attains a bride, that he's only known via the mail, and ends up with Catherine Deneuve. You've got to feel for these people.

If "everybody" felt the same for important work...

TT would not have gotten this. This film, on Blu, deserves a much bigger audience.

Could not agree more.

Great Truffaut film and good performances from Deneuve and Belmondo. I have the old dvd so this one is a easy buy just like The Bride Wore Black. Like to see Two English Girls and Small Change and there is talk that Criterion will release English Girls soon.

A Twilight Time fail? That's rare. I'll still purchase though, because I'm a Truffaut completist.

No such thing as an anamorphic Blu-ray, sir! ;)

I don't see it that way. Twilight Time has no control over the master. If they desire to make it available, it's apparently this or nothing. Any "fail" attaches to the rightsholder.

I pretty much said the same thing about Kino regarding Marty, but people were intent on crucifying Kino over it.

You're correct. It's not Kino. They neither accept the master, or don't release. With their release, at least the film is available.

For the sub-licensees, they're generally on terra firma with Columbia and Fox. All else, wait for reviews.

I guess I'll have to get it and accept the picture quality as the best we're likely to see ...

This was not included in the dozen Truffaut movies released recently in the UK in very decent editions from Artificial Eye, so that's one more off the list.

With 'Day for Night' on the way from Criterion, I'm still awaiting 'Small Change' and 'The Wild Child' to complete my essential Truffauts.

I'll post about this and some other Twilight Time titles tomorrow, but this isn't a fail for me. I saw this film twenty times during its original release and love it. The colors are mostly what they were in the release prints, which really did resemble what's on view here. Is it a great transfer - no, absolutely not. Is it from a dupe negative - of course. Could it be better - absolutely. Some dirt - sure. But I was expecting a disaster and it's not a disaster. Many scenes have pleasing detail, the opticals are of course softer, and the most alarming moment comes right at the beginning - the opening Les Films Arianes credit - once you're past that it looks fine. And, dare I say, a 1000 times better than the DVD. So, my feeling is if you're a fan of this film you'll probably be okay with this.

No, Kino just fails to include sub tracks half the time for the hard of hearing that are already created and available, so they drop the ball in other ways in their pursuit to rush out an inferior product.

I'm now holding off on Mississippi Mermaid because I can't believe this won't be given wider international release. Surely it will become available in Britain or mainland Europe or even, dare I hope, Australia!

Yeah the old DVD was just a port of a laserdisc transfer. At times I have to wonder whether RAH has gone too far over the deep end with his "4k or nothing!" crusade to not overlook such things.

There is no "4k or nothing! crusade."

My position is that most films need on be on 4k for home theater purposes.

I'm not certain that Mississippi Mermaid, derived from this master, need be on HD.

SD would have been fine.

There are many films that have been released on Blu-ray that needn't be.

Seems as if it looked like a VHS tape when it was released on DVD so to finally get to DVD quality it had to be released on Blu-ray...
