I've never understood the timing for releasing Season One of a DVD in late September, just around the time of a Season Two episodes starting to air.

Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to release the previous season in August, before the new episodes start?
I can't tell you how many times I want to get I to a new show, and there is no way to catch up on earlier episodes by buying the dvd sets, they come out too late.

On several occasions I've bailed on watching the show on tv altogether, both The West Wing and Smallville I ended up watching the final 5 seasons on DVD a year after airing because I missed the first two years, and could never catch up.

I was watching Marvel Agents of Shield at the beginning of Season 1 on tv, and got behind, and the DVDs didn't come out before Season 2 started. Now I'm off the show,
don't know if I'll ever catch up.

I watched all the episodes of the Flash season 1, great
show! I missed about two, and caught up via the website
from my cable provider where you can watch the previous week.
I almost got behind. Yesterday the dvd of season1 was announced for sept 22. Why do they pick this date?
I'd love to watch all the episodes again before season 2 starts,
but there isn't enough time. It's a mystery to me why they've always done this.

I've assumed they're relatively close to each other as a cross promotion. The Blu-ray/DVD promotes the new episodes and the new episodes promote the Blu-ray/DVD and doing it too early isn't as effective as doing it closer to each date.

But cross promotion won't add any new viewers, they're already watching.
You'd think that if the DVD came out a few weeks earlier, it would help the
marketing of the new series. They could appeal to people that didn't see
the show from the beginning.

I've looked at some ratings for these kinds of series, and they don't usually
grow an audience. They drop off after the first few episodes, and if the show
continues, the audience number often just settles at some level until a few
seasons go by, and if the ratings drop it gets cancelled. It doesn't seem
like they actually even try to use the dvd to grow their audience.
