I noticed this was just released in France, anyone here buying this? The non anamorphic dvd is long over due for an upgrade so if this blu ray looks good I will be getting it. Not sure yet if there are enforced subtitles - hope not! A bit of a guilty pleasure of mine - not really a bad Western at all.

I decided to be the guinea pig. Ratio is 2.35 - it was, of course, a Super Technirama film and 70 prints were in 6-track stereo - this is 2.0 - but, we'll see what it's like and obviously it has to be a huge step up from the DVD.

There's also a French blu ray of Cowboy (1958) due out on June 24th. If it weren't for the problem of forced subs, I'd be on both Custer and Cowboy immediately but I'll wait to hear reviews first.

I obviously missed that one! At this point it would be worth seeing how the two releases compare, and go from there. Thank you for mentioning about it!

I ordered it as well. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a good Blu-ray!

I purchased a Philips region-free Blu-ray player that includes subtitle shift. For movies with forced subtitles you can move the subtitles off the TV screen when there is one line of text only. When there is two lines of text only the first line will show on the very bottom of the TV screen. It is not perfect but it makes the Blu-ray much more view able. I understand OPPO includes a similar subtitle shift feature.

I received Custer of the West today and haven't watched it but I did spot check it. It is zone (region) free but has forced French subtitles. It also is 1080i50Hz rather than 1080p. The 138 minute (with PAL speed-up) film is on a BD25 with only around 19 GB allotted to the film. Although the packaging says BD50, it is a BD25 disc. It also looks like it was sourced from a print, with cue marks, too much contrast, and softness (which can be attributed to the small file size for a film this long as well). Color looks good to me. Most people will probably want to skip this one. :(

I saw a review somewhere (of course I can't find it now) , in French that said it was a pretty bad transfer. Probably sourced from the same elements as the VHS tape I have.
