Sadly the work around is a nightmare. You really should just get an HDMI HT to simplify it. I had the same issue and had so many cables it drove me nuts. Good luck.
But yes Blu ray to TV then digital audio out to receiver. Hopefully there will not be a sound delay.

There are HDMI switches that take 5.1 audio off via toslink and/or coax. Not all of them do(depends if the switch itself has an EDID identity).

I would suggest you get one. There are several on Amazon($50-$75 ) and I think there is one at MonoPrice.

Alternately, check A4L to see how low their current price is on a Denon or Onkyo. I'd rather spent $150 on a new AVR before I spent half that making a BD player function on an older AVR.

Your choice though.

Or, return that particular Sony and move up to one that has a optical/coax output. Sony should have one. If not, LG and Panasonic do. Either way you are spending money to get that one "to work". I'd rather spend that money upgrading the AVR or on a BD player with an audio output.

The "last option" is to connect the BD player to the TV. Use the TV as the hub, but you'll only have 2.0 pcm to work with.

I think I would look at the new AVR as Sam suggested. I poked around A4L and honestly Amazon has a good deal going on the Yamaha RX-V377 for $180 new or $160 refurbished with prime shipping. I'm not sure you're going to get something as capable at that price. Yes you can save a few 20ish going with another refurb from A4L but without auto setup (YPAO) that I think would make a difference in your system.
