Television's most hyperbolic and overly-dramatic cooking show returns, with the withering stare of Joe Bastianich replaced by the sweet smile of Christina Tosi.

When the urban gardener squared off against the, uh, theatrical fashion designer, is there anyone who didn't know the outcome before they started cooking? Once again, it seems like the series is "casting" a show rather that selecting the best home cooks, even if they aren't quirky or hot or equipped with a sad backstory, or playing to the camera every 10 seconds.

I am disappointed in that trend, but I still like the format and am looking forward to the rest of the season.

I don't agree with the "casting" criticism: I actually think that's too an easy criticism to make (lots of people say it about lots of shows), and it doesn't actually apply to this show. Last season, I think the best chef won, even if a lot of forum members hated her (for silly reasons they don't want to admit), and the second-best chef placed as runner up. Cutter was the only silly choice arguably pushed through for his drama with Leslie (another skilled chef who deserved his place).

I'm not sure I remember what happened last year. I admit, I tend to enjoy this show and I've enjoyed the winners for the most part.. who couldn't root for a blind chef? And Whitney from season whatever was so easy to root for..

Looks like we have a few cannon fodder weeks coming up, as the cooks who received little to no airtime in the season premiere are eliminated.

I was surprised Dan saved as many people as he did. Still too early for me to pick favorites, though I think Katrina has a compelling story, as does the rock star turned home cook.

"the, uh, theatrical fashion designer" should be leaving soon. Couldn't believe he made it through the first round.

To many players so far to choose a favorite or any "hated one". One of my few guilty pleasures this time of year. Very phony, yet good entertainment.

He should have left tonight. He turned in total garbage and was still saved because they think he's good television. That's what drives me nuts about this show sometimes.

On the plus side, it's never a real MasterChef season until Gordon utters those immortal words "It's RAW!" So that was enjoyable.

A BIG +1. My wife and I paused the show tonight when it came down to the two with the worst cinnamon buns: Darah and Tommy. It was obvious to both of us whom would be selected to stay/go. As Dave wrote: "they think he's good television." In our case, they are wrong.

Darah was a bad leader, made silly silly choices for safety (the judges really hate this for some reason), didn't roll or bake her cinnamon buns properly, and they bad tasting in any event; that's five strikes. Tommy over thought his cinnamon buns and didn't prepare/bake them properly, but they had some decent qualities taste-wise (I forget how Gordon described them); that's two or three strikes. Tommy was dreadful, but Darah was worse.

Darah made Cinnamon Rolls - Tommy made green tea rolls that Gordon compared to vomit. I'm no expert in the kitchen, but....

It almost looked like Tommy was making sushi.

Tommy's comment about Katrina knowing cookies, pies, cakes and such better than him almost sounded like he was making a comment about the way she looks, which was really rude.

Wish he would have left.

But I thought it was funny when Tommy went up to the balcony and stood next to Katrina, she immediately walked away from him.

And is it just me, but doesn't it seem like Olivia gives the worst looks.

She always looks like she's unhappy and just nasty.

Tommy vs. Katrina is just part of the faux (or, if by some chance real, insignificant) drama foisted upon the contestants and audience by the producers.

And, of course, Tommy is flamboyant, rude and loud and Katrina is socially dysfunctional...so what does it make for? That's right. Good television.

A guilty pleasure. And let's face it, especially at the beginning it is more luck than skill that helps you to stay or go. Last week 10 people did not have to cook in the elimination test just because they were given an apple. Last night another 5 people were arbitrarily saved by Darah (and it didn't sound like Gordon and the others agreed with her choices. They really slammed Sara in particular).

So, we watch it for what it is..a fun summer show and when the numbers whittle down we start to see the real stars.

We also have a version of this in Canada that just ended. It is so different in that no one is screaming at them like Gordon. The Canadian way.

Ramsey is a big personality. He is fun and interesting to watch. But his shows, like many, are veering away from the original concept that made them compelling in the first place: cooking competitions. More and more such shows are turning into thematic, faux-dramatic soap operas.

Glenn: It sounds like the Canadian version (and I know there are other versions out there as well) might adhere more to the original concept? I've seen episodes of the UK MasterChef (on BBC America)and it is radically different...and concentrates much more on the actual thought process of what goes on the plate.

Ramsay's Hells Kitchen show has really ballooned into an over-the-top yell-fest subject to arbitrary decisions and the same type of production whims...and penchant for loudness over cooking.

This show is hilarious.

Just now viewing this week's episode. OMG, who does Ramsay's hair and wardrobe? If he were 20 years younger he might be able to get away with that haircut, And he's way beyond the age where he can pull off wearing "skinny jeans". For all the Ramsay fans, just shoot me now, but he's so over the top I've got to say something.

The show is definitely a guilty pleasure, more humorous than informative. Normally somebody stands out as a favorite, but I have yet to see anyone I like, major group of losers this year.

Not a very memorable episode this week. We didn't even get to see all of the corn dishes before they kicked the mouthy teenager out.

Unfortunately, that's a common thing (not getting to see all the dishes).

Agreed that it wasn't very memorable.

I liked the new judge holding her ground and telling the one contestant that her corn creme brulee was really bad. Directness pays off in moments like those.

I don't mind the new judge, but does anyone know the reason Joe is no longer on the show?

Don't miss Joe at all. Condescending, arrogant and many other words I can't say on this forum. Didn't even know he started his own show, but I'll pass, there is much more fun stuff to watch this summer.
