I've been enjoying the location footage in these shows lately:

The Fugitive

Route 66

Naked City

Streets of SF

Hawaii 5-0

East Side/West Side

What are some others?

Just about any 50's-60's show produced by ZIV Television Programs, Inc. and many by REVUE Studios. In fact, their production values are often so high, these two smaller companies put the major studios to shame from that same era.

A-M-E-N to those sentiments, Glen. It's pretty much an automatic buy for me if it's done by ZIV. Revue also did a nice job with many of their series.

As I grow older I'm finding more and more that the on-location footage, or lack thereof, can make a huge impact on my enjoyment of an episode. Westerns and Adventure/Action series in particular can either be greatly helped or greatly hampered based on this issue.

Gary "nothing worse than feeling claustrophobic while watching a scene that is supposed to be taking place in the wide open outdoors but is instead taking place on a soundstage" O.

Highway Patrol has got to be the best tv time capsule for 1950's Southern California...I recently watched an episode with a greasy and desperate Peter Breck on the run and taking hostages from season 4...a fantastic and wide rangeing virtual tour of Long Beach...eye popping...so glad that TGG gave us those releases...

Absolutely howl with delight at Broderick Crawford's economical use of language...hustling off some rotten hood and giving him the bum's rush and in an irritated tone yelling "c'mon let's go"...

Route 66 and Naked City...both American treasures...not just the incredible location shooting, but the frequent use of helicopters...the camera shot flying over the George Washington Bridge among many in Naked City...as Rip Torn and Tuesday Weld drive across on the way to their bloody rampage...

I Spy for the great location work at the Parthenon and Greek islands...The Persuaders for Cote D'azure...

Rawhide for taking us on the old route 79 tour...Superstition mountains, Oro valley, Santa Rita mountains, the incredible ruins at Casa Grande national monument, Mission San Xavier del Bac (White Dove of the Desert), Cochise Stronghold Canyon, Tucumcari, N.M.,...wow, just wow...

I also enjoyed the recent Showtime series Fargo for filming in my hometown and surrounding area...Calgary, Alberta, Canada... standing in for Fargo, N.D., Bemidji, MN., and Duluth MN.,...season two currently in production here also...it's set in the 1970's as a back story to the events as shown in season one...they filmed in my old neighbourhood and filled the street with period automobiles...

Sometimes, while viewing Route 66, I wonder about the thrill people had in seeing their hometowns of places like Kanab, UT, Apache Junction, AZ, Butte MT., and many others...and maybe having a fleeting glimpse of an aunt or uncle or old friend preserved on film as an unpaid local in those wonderful crowds of bystanders...

Original-recipe Five-O was especially notable for being filmed on location in Hawaii; in fact, the closing credits for almost all of its run on CBS from 1968-80 said so (example captured from a fifth-season ending from that season's DVD).

Same here, Gary, on all counts.

I've yet to see a ZIV show I haven't liked (and, yes, that includes HOME RUN DERBY). I admit it took me awhile to warm up to MEN INTO SPACE, but as the series progresses it gets better and better. Same for WEST POINT, which I haven't finished yet, but, like SPACE, seems to be improving in the second half as it moves away from the repetitious story lines of the first.

Many of the shows in my Top 25 wishlist are from ZIV. Like the REVUE series, I'm very grateful that at least some have managed to come out, but there's always room for more. ;)

HARBOR COMMAND from Timeless/Shout Factory has some great location work and the earlier BOSTON BLACKIE series with Kent Taylor is a fantastic look at the Los Angeles area. At one point, in an episode titled "Trailer Park Shootout", you can see the RKO water tower in the background of the trailer park scenes. I wish the Boston Blackie series would get a legit release someday.

All of the Brodkin shows were shot in NY and Coronet Blue has some great location shooting. Also from the 1980s, The Equalizer. Decoy has some great NY location shooting as does Car 54.

The BBC sitcom 'Allo 'Allo always, I felt, had really nice location shooting. I think they did a really good job of finding suitable locations to represent WWII-era occupied France, and their use of exterior locations elevated the show a bit, in my opinion, from the standard studio-bound sitcoms that were more the norm.

This is one of the reasons why Ironside suffers visually compared to Streets of San Francisco. The Universal backlot really can't compare to the background detail and regional authenticity seen on the latter show.
