Would The Parent Trap get a PG-13 rating by today's standards? (1 Viewer)

Well, here are some pretty strong details for a PG-rated movie by today's standards; the movie I am discussing is the one Lindsay Lohan made after the original, more-kid-oriented 1961 movie:

1. In comparison to the PG movies (and even some PG-13) made today, The Parent Trap has exceptionally developed sexual substance, allusion, dialog, excessive kissing scenes (particularly by Meredith and Nick), and references.

2. An ear-piercing scene was very graphic (though it was shorter in the TV version).

3. Hallie talks (around her elder) about marriage being based on sex. Marriage is supposed to be based on something more than just sex, right?

4. Hallie uses the Lord's name (especially Oh, my God) in vain 10-15 times.

5. A man wears a tight speedo in one scene.

By the way, yes, I have seen the movie twice.

Oh yes, that ear-piercing scene... I remember it well (particularly the reaction from audience members when I saw it in the theater). I believe it was slightly edited for TV.

Weird that many movies rated PG 15-20 years ago now feel like they're rated R. But I loved The Parent Trap, and also The Little Rascals (my childhood movie).

Hello World!
Calculate mechanical efficiency/transmission dyno figure using TorqueStats!
...and this Parent Trap thread!

Three uniquely different threads on your opening day.

"Don't know Mills from Lohan" is a favourite phrase I picked up on HTF.

Welcome anyway.

Every time I see this movie on TV, I mourn how Lohan's genuine talent has been wasted. Her feat as the central twins is some really remarkable work for a child actress, especially when one twin is impersonating the other.

With regard to the original question, I think it's comfortably a PG movie, however Disney regularly manages G and PG ratings for films that would be PG and PG-13 respectively from any other studio.

And as I always like to say in the thread here dedicated to Miss Lohan, that potential is really still there, Adam. It is.

She just needs to focus on the craft and the world could be her oyster.

[Pessimism]I'm sure she'll be able to keep working in low budget movies for at least another decade but she's damaged her career so badly that she's nearly erased any chance of ever being taken seriously or getting bigger roles in studio pictures. People love a comeback but her real life/tabloid exploits have totally eclipsed any accomplishments she's achieved onscreen. It's sad because she's talented but she's now basically a reality star (like Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian) who is famous for being famous than someone who is seen as an actor.[/Pessimism]

Usually anything rated PG 10-20 years ago would be PG-13 today. Anything PG-13 in the '90s and '00s would generally be re-given an "R" rating; like Waterboy or Johnson Family Vacation, but very rarely PG, like the Spider-Man and Transformer movies.

When I first heard about the Lohan PARENT TRAP, my first thought was "Why couldn't they do it like the original--with real twins playing the sisters?" But then I remembered: Hayley Mills was NOT a pair of twins.

They actually could have gone that route in the Lohan version by casting the Olsen Twins instead of Lohan, who was born the same year (1986) as the Olsen Twins who are less than a month older than Lohan.

Also born in 1986 from one to three months earlier: Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and Amanda Bynes.

I've always thought someone should update the parent trap with older (college age) kids in a much more R rated romp in the spirit of say, Eurotrip.

Or update it with MUCH older kids and cast Hayley Mills!
