DRESSED TO KILL – Blu-ray & DVD Editions

Brian De Palma (Carrie) ascended to the highest ranks of American suspense filmmaking with this virtuoso, explicit erotic thriller. At once tongue-in-cheek and scary as hell, Dressed to Kill revolves around the grisly murder of a woman in Manhattan, and what happens when her psychiatrist, her brainiac teenage son, and the prostitute who witnessed the crime try to piece together what happened while the killer remains at large. With its masterfully executed scenes of horror, voluptuous camera work, and passionate score, Dressed to Kill is a veritable symphony of terror, enhanced by vivid performances by Angie Dickinson (Rio Bravo), Michael Caine (Alfie), and Nancy Allen (Blow Out).

I'm really going to have to wait on reviews before making this upgrade....I have the MGM release and have read reviews that the Carlotta Films and Arrow releases are similar if not identical in terms of audio/visual properties. Love this movie but unless the transfer is a significant upgrade to what I have, then I'll have to pass.

I'd heard the domestic R1 blu did an injustice to Pino Donaggio's underscore (so important to the film) that I didn't buy it. Hopefully the sound on the Criterion will bring the score to the forefront again.

Yes, it's horrible. Happy for this release and the words "uncompressed monaural"!

I wrote to Criterion asking if we would get the original Filmways logo restored to Dressed to Kill (like Blow Out included) and they confirmed good news.
Thanks for your email and inquiry. The answer to your question is yes, the Filmways logo is included in the upcoming Criterion release of DRESSED TO KILL.

All the best and thanks for supporting Criterion,

Judging by those dvdbeaver screenshots, seems like the Criterion transfer was botched at some point during mastering. It looks stretched (faces look thinner, circles look like ovals) and includes more information on the frame that was likely never meant to be seen when projected.

Huh - there are two Dressed to Kill threads !! :)

I dont know what to make of the Criterion release, it sure is a different looking presentation. My plan was to keep the Arrow and retire the MGM anyway.. I hope for more reviews of it to get an idea of what the real consensus is

That's for sure. I know we're not supposed to put much stock in screencaps, but the Criterion looks obviously squished

I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Criterion addresses the issue. Again, screenshots can be deceptive but I'm holding off till more feedback comes in.

I'm sticking to the British Arrow release. Those Beaver screengrabs, if accurate, show the Criterion transfer as unholy.

It's bizarre, isn't it?!

Normally, my first thought would be that it's an error, but this is Criterion we're dealing with here, so it MUST be intentional. I just can't figure out why the picture is squeezed. Admittedly, there's A LOT more picture information on the left side, but if De Palma wanted that, then why not just increase the aspect ratio beyond 2.35:1, like the original DVD of The Great Escape (which was, itself, an error).

I really like this film, and I'm sure I'll get the Criterion version to supplement the already excellent Arrow release, but I'd quite like some kind of statement from Criterion explaining their version's obvious differences.

Have we not learned not to rush to judgment on these things, especially in terms of comparing to other transfers? It's also important to note, that while he doesn't really have a clue, the Beaver, who is the ONLY one of us who's actually seen the transfer, ultimately says he's beginning to think the Criterion is correct. In other words, our eyes are fooled by the caps because it is not possible to look at the Criterion and judge it when the cap above it is being used for comparison - of course they look different - they ARE different. This isn't the first time this has happened - if I recall there was much hue and cry about stretching on Westworld, but there it was obvious the new transfer was NOT stretched but correct and the older HAD been stretched. Criterion is not infallible but nor are they stupid and until I see this I'm not rushing to judgment and saying it's wrong. Can't comment on the color, either, until I've actually seen it, but even looking at the caps, the Criterion looks more accurate to me in terms of the cameraman's style back then.
