Returns on Sunday, July 26th. They just released this in anticipation of the premiere:

Looks like they're crossing over with The Simpsons this Sunday. I totally geeked out on the Slurm vending-machine.

Morty: "Harry Shearer? You mean that guy from Spinal Tap who died in a boating accident?"

Rick: "...Not in this universe, Morty!"

Rick and Morty is going to explode even moreso than it already has with this kind of exposure. If this means more fans of Rick and Morty, it means we get more Rick and Morty-things. More episodes, more merchandise, more alcoholism.

Rick and Morty forever.

I really enjoyed this first episode.

Loved Rick shooting at himself across the broken timelines.

"Now listen, I know the two of you are very different from each other in a lot of ways, but you have to understand, that as far as Grandpa's concerned, you're both pieces of shit. Yeah, I can prove it mathematically. Actually, let me grab a whiteboard -- this has been a long time coming."

This episode had a more pronounced mean-streak than any episode last season, which is really saying something. Rick's abrupt switch from dignified resignation to desperate bargaining with God, and then cocky defiance, was great.

So, Episode 2 pretty much blew my socks off. That was the show doing everything it does great. Firing on all cylinders, there.

The daycare for Jerrys was inspired, and just about anything with Jemaine Clement singing gets high marks from me.

The alien exploding in front of Jerry in the alley (for no apparent reason) put me in hysterics.

Also: "Oh boy, here I go, killin' again."

Yeah, that was a great episode!

Loved the game "Roy. A life well lived". How great was that?!

And the Jerry switch at the end... Frickin hilarious.

If there was a disappointment in this episode, it was that we only got a brief look at Blips 'N Chitz. That Roy-game was fantastic.

HOLY SHIT THIS GUY IS TAKING ROY OFF THE GRID! THIS GUY DOESN'T HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER FOR ROY!!!

WHO WANTS TO WATCH MIDNIGHT RUUUUUUUUN WITH DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY ONNNNNNNNN???

FIRST ONE THERE GETS TO ADJUST THE PICTURE SETTIIIIIIIIIINGS!

"The factory tint-setting is always too hiiiiiiiigh!"

...Oh god, this show knows my shames.

"First race-war, huh?"

Looks like Morty's starting to show a bit of Rick's influence. And that sequence of Rick's suicide attempt at the end...damn.

This show is a gift from God. Who, in reality, is probably just another version of Rick.

As we were watching last night's episode, I turned to Clempatrix the Centaur and exclaimed, "this is the best episode of the season!" He whinnied agreed wholeheartedly.

Then we spooned. A great night.

That's another one for the top tier. The "Rixty Minutes"-tier.

Anyone else catch Mr. Poopybutthole throughout the opening credits? Most of the opening credits of this episode were "fake flashbacks" from the episode itself.

But Mr. Poopybutthole was definitely inserted into the last shot of the opening before the title-reveal.

If anyone has a bigger version...

Funny enough, I usually FF through the credits but did not last night so I caught Mr Poopybutthole inserted throughout. It just dawned on me that he is named Mr Poopybutthole, but he looks like something you insert into a poopy butthole.

"Summer, I've always loved you!!"

cold and disinterested Summer pulls the trigger

"...Yep."

That line-reading was just fucking dripping in betrayal.

I love how Rick's adventures are developing Morty and Summer differently. Morty's being forged in this fire, but Summer has a few key formative years on him. He's adapting; she's getting her M.O. bludgeoned with this shit from a very different environment than what she was raised in, turning completely jaded and misanthropic.

(Also, the other-best Summer-related moment this episode: The out-of-nowhere gangsta rap verse in Tinkles' song.)

We took that sequence as a goof on "Everything is Awesome"

I can't get enough of Justin Roiland's shrill voice for minor wacky characters. I loved his wailing as Lemongrab in Adventure Time...and Rick & Morty just gives him many more opportunities to unleash that voice.

And Jesus Christ, this show is the darkest timeline version of Futurama. Whereas Futurama occasionally tugged on the heartstrings, RIck & Morty more often kicks you right in the balls.

Much like Community (and to an even greater extent with Arrested Development), Rick & Morty doesn't let people's fondness for the characters override how truly damaged they all are. It's a balancing act that takes a huge amount of talent to maintain.

This episode was a LOT of fun, and as impressive as the gonzo flashback-sequences were, my biggest laughs were actually from more grounded exchanges.

"Jerry, buttons don't work better when you hit them, and foam fists don't make you strong."

"I know -- friends make you strong. I watched the same musical you did."

"We got a word for Nazis back in Brooklyn!"

"I am comfortable being called 'a Nazi!' You think there's some other word that will make me feel bad?

*beat*

"...Yeah. Think before you talk shit."

At long last, a chance for Harmon to use his Ice-T/Vincent Price voice.

I enjoyed last night's episode -- very outlandish and out-there. I thought it was solid. Disappointing only in the sense that it was following, like, four straight episodes of pure, concentrated genius. This felt like a return to Season 1, pre-"Rixty Minutes."

(Also, good to see Bird Person again. "I don't know what humans eat.")

The B-plot with Summer and the ship is one of the darkest things this show has ever done. That was absolutely fantastic.

"You all have loved ones. All can be returned. All can be taken away. Keep Summer safe."

The fact that all the to-do with the microverses was resolved with Rick literally beating the next generation into submission is pretty damn dark, too, when you get right down to it. This also defused whatever concerns I might've had about the rest of the season. They established their ridiculous premise (the microverse-battery), and everything just grew organically from there.

Love that the car starting is some sort of victory, but it's couched in the utter defeat of an entire universe just so Rick can charge his fucking phone. Also, Morty's really starting to become more capable, and it's great.

"I booked you for a two-day intensive on Nuptia IV, the galaxy's most successful couples-counseling institute. They could save the marriage of a dog and a bar of dark chocolate. They could save the marriage of a porn star and a porn star."

I thought last night's episode was worth it just for the "Coach Feratu"-joke alone (with the gym bag full of bloody stakes, and that final post-credits stinger).

I love how well they're using the cast this year. This may be the first time that the Beth/Jerry stuff was head-and-shoulders stronger (and made better use of the sci-fi conceit) than the Rick/Morty adventure. Which of course wasn't horrible by any means, but I just never quite grasped how Tiny Rick was not the "real" Rick, or whatever was going on there.

Also, I think I like him better as a bitter, misanthropic drunk rather than the good-time partybro they've been portraying him as more frequently this year. (And Jerry actually figured out how to beat Xenomorph Queen Beth!)

I loved last season, but this season is just destroying shit all over the place. Ricks Must Be Crazy was the best episode of the series. That's the third time I've used the phrase, "the best episode of the series" to describe an episode this season.

3 eps left.
