I'm looking to buy a DVD of the old Hayley Mills film TIGER BAY. I know I'll have to go with Region 2, which is fine. However, Amazon has ... once again ... combined the reviews for all the various editions into one list. Does anyone know which, if any, is in the correct ratio? It appears that the English one isn't ... how about the German one? Or any other, for that matter. Again, thanks in advance for any and all help.

They didn't have much widescreen in 1959 so I would bet that this is in the correct aspect ratio!!

Not so. The UK moved into widescreen quickly as the link in Brent's post to the HTF Aspect Ratio Documentation thread explains.

The UK DVD on the ITV Studios label is 1.66:1 which is the correct ratio as recorded in the trade paper Kine Weekly at the time of production (incidentally,I saw the film when it was first released). The ratio 1.33:1 given on Amazon and imdb is, of course, incorrect.

There has been a 1.66:1 HD master produced, but not as yet released on Blu-ray commercially. Would also like to see a decent Blu of another early Hayler Mills, WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND.

Wouldn't they make a really nice Blu-ray double feature ?

Absolutely! Kind of a no-brainer. Both movies were distributed by Rank in 1959 and 1961 respectively, and ITV released both films on nice DVD's with the proper ratio of 1.66:1 and both included commentaries. My problem with both is that they play very jerkily on my region-free players, and there are some PAL to NTSC alliasing issues. Blu-ray would solve all of that, but the current rights for Blu-ray release might be split...I've no idea..

Let's hope someone "in power" reads this and facilitates such a release.
