David Butler, the director of Thank Your Lucky Stars, has his roots in the silent cinema, with a career as an actor beginning in the teens and twenties, before moving into directing around 1927.

He's probably best known here at HTF for some of his Fox work in the thirties, directing Eddie Cantor (among others), hence the connection to TYLS.  At WB, he directed San Antonio and Calamity Jane.

TYLS is a slightly, delightfully nutty film, about producers prepping to put on a show for the war effort.

The stars, virtually every major name on the Warner lot, donated their time (and salaries) to the Hollywood Canteen, which was originally supported by John Garfield and Bette Davis.

To me, the film, seen here for the first time in decades in absolutely stunning quality, has always reminded me of those signs that one might see along the highway during a drive to Florida in fifties.  SEE Alligator Wresting!!  SEE Shrunken Heads!!

Here the odd attraction is seeing Humphrey Bogart playing a rift on his bibliophile character in The Big Sleep in a scene with S.Z. Sakall (Casablanca), hearing Bette Davis and Ann Sheridan sing, seeing Hattie MacDaniel dressed as a bride, or catching a hot number by Olivia De Havilland, Ida Lupino and George Tobias -- I don't recall hearing any of them sing before.

Bottom line, Thank Your Lucky Stars has been beautifully restored for WB's Archive Collection, and it remains, to this day, one of the stranger films to come from the studio, and an absolute delight.  Anyone for some great tunes song by former big band songstress Dinah Shore, in one of her rare feature film appearences.

This film is a collector's item; the kind of film that, in pre Home Theater days when you had to get out and go to a re-run house to see old movies, would have had a cult following among some film enthusiasts. I was never one of the cliques but I'm buying this disc. Absolutely delighted it's such good quality.

Anyone who loves well-written songs should be aware that this film includes that impudent song Love Isn't Born, It's Made. Frank Loesser's risqué lyric begins:

Love isn't born on a beautiful April morn.

Love isn't born; it's made.

And that's why every window has a window shade.

And it goes on like that. A classic song and very little known.

I saw this on late night TV years ago and was impressed. To see Sakall and Bogart - when Bogart walks off like a wimp after a browbeating from Sakall - was a high point. The plot trick of an imposter for Eddie Cantor was later reprised in Frank Zappa's 200 Motels, where Ringo Starr played the part of the Zappa impostor.

Pre-ordered on Amazon through HTF thanks to Mr. Harris' stellar (no put intended) review.

Lots of great 'inside' jokes in this flick, and I love the score. I'm glad to hear of the top-quality presentation, as many sequences are beautifully photographed, Hearing that terrific score swung by the Warner orchestra with lossless sound makes this a must-have for me.

This release is one of the most unexpected choices to come from Warner Archive, and I'm so pleased that there are so many unexpected oddball releases sandwiched between some more obvious ones. This was only available on DVD as part of of the Warner Homefront set, which is quite a treasure itself all the way around. Very happy to hear it looks terrific as a blu-ray.

I watched this Blu-ray this afternoon after having it rest on my To-Watch shelf for many, many months. Though as usual I tired of the Eddie Cantor frame story (though I have to say he was a good sport to allow so many stars to take pot shots at him), the score is a tonic and many of the stars putting over the numbers display charm and are delightful even though musicals aren't their element (but John Garfield definitely showed he was not cut out to be a musical performer).

The quality was really first rate with superb sharpness (except for glamour photography for Dinah Shore's close-ups) and a perfectly clean picture. Mono sound was very crisp and accurate. Glad to have this in my collection!

Thanks for reminding me that I'm overdue for a re-watch of this film. Perhaps tonight.

I've only seen parts of this film as I don't usually like musicals and I can't stand Eddie Cantor, but I decided to buy this BD due to your comments.

Edit: I do have the 2008 DVD, but never watched it.

On the disc, there is a song selection listing which is where you might want to go in order to avoid the Cantor frame story (he does sing two or three songs, too, if you want to avoid those AND he plays dual roles which means TWICE as much Cantor).
