I absolutely cannot wait for this. I want my home on solar but I want it for reserve power in case of grid failure, not just to reduce my own footprint.

I think this is a cool idea and would be very beneficial in rural areas. Another thing I think it could (eventually) help with is the national grid and its inherent problems.

Think about it - some electricity goes wasted because there's not a need for it, right then. But with more home batteries, the electric company could 'dump' that electricity - charging up the batteries so it isn't wasted.

However, a few things - first, it's going to take some 'early adopters' and plenty of rebates to get this ball rolling. I'd love to go out and pick one up, but 13K is pretty steep. Unfortunately, that'd have to be reduced down to about 1/4th the price before I'd seriously consider it.

Second, although probably mostly mitigated by charging up every night, people would have to learn more about electricity and especially batteries - you absolutely do not want to let them discharge past 50%, and preferrably 70%, before charging. You start going that low and you quickly reduce the lifespan of said battery - and at 13K, that'd be a very dumb move.

Like I said, though, this could greatly benefit rural areas, as long as they don't make it too hard for the customer to charge up his own battery. Most people would probably still want to be grid-tied, but personally, if I could come up with a stable method of charging, I'd love the idea of getting rid of the electrical bill!

As retrofits it's a big chunk to swallow. As new home construction with panels and battery installed pre-move in and rolled into the mortgage it's like a 10% difference on a 200k house. 5% on a $400k house, so expect the McMansion set to adopt em first and drive the prices down to where everyone can afford em.

Yes, right now in an existing home there are more economical ways to get backup power. Around here, natural gas powered whole house generators are getting popular, and my parents have a propane powered one for their home in rural northern Michigan.

i dont know ?

as bevs come into adoption, most people will be charging them at night

if we also had a widespread adoption of batteries also being charged at night, it might defeat the purpose

there are always gonna be some exceptions, but not sure if this makes sense on a more global basis

I wonder if "the news" is these are L-ion.

Mine provide 2-5 minutes of buffer for the generator. Although mine are lead acid...it is twice the size. But...it is a basement and stationary.

Unless this has a huge capacity...

By the way, if this is L-ion...

Our facility is switching from swap-lead acid to opportunity charge L-ion walkie, lift and fork truck.

We already have the fork. Drive totally different as the batteries weigh 50% less, so the truck itself has to weigh more. The first week we had incidents (minor) involving the new fork trucks. Entering and leaving trailors that require a different height(or as height changes on the plate) the new trucks rock more. Before, the lead acid trucks 50% point was less than 9 inches off the ground. The new trucks, 50% point is 3 feet off the ground.
