I know this is a long shot but here goes. This was an animated, black and white 3D anaglyph documentary about evolution. It may have had "Life" in the title.

I saw it in the 80s at the UK's National Media Museum (although it wasn't called that back then) in Bradford and it may have been in IMAX but I can't be sure.

The most memorable moment was an animated DNA molecule swinging out of the screen and making everyone in the audience duck.

Does it ring any bells with anyone?

That sounds like We are Born of Stars, anaglyphic 3-D IMAX: released January 1985.

I had no idea there was such a thing as Imax 3-D in anaglyph format(other than for home video releases). Seems like anaglyph goes against what Imax stands for. It still amazes me that they were able to turn Imax into a viable format, and then a 3-D format, given the expenses they must've faced every step of the way,

Thanks Bob, that's the one. :)

Although it was shown on the IMAX screen, I couldn't honestly have said whether or not it was made in IMAX.

It was filmed in the IMAX 70MM process.

I remember taking my father to see it. He'd relented after vowing never to go the cinema with me again: I think "Rollercoaster" (in "Sensurround") had made him question my judgement.

After 8 years, I thought he might be ready for IMAX 3D. :) :3dglasses:

According to IMDb, this was the first IMAX 3D movie. The anaglyph glasses were huge.

I remember going to the Imax theatre inside the Las Vegas Luxor casino and you had to wear these very large and heavy LCD 3D glasses. I think they had tiny speakers inside them also. The Imax theatre was replaced with Bodies... The Exhibition and the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition many years ago.

I think I've worn the LCD glasses you mention: they're almost like an arc welder's goggles. I remember wearing them to see "Wings of Courage". They were electronically synced to the projector as today's systems (presumably) still are.

The anaglyph specs I referred to were only cardboard but noticeably larger than usual.

I remember using that system to see "Across the Sea of Time". So damn heavy. Gave me a lifelong bias against shutterglasses.

Yes, me too. I'd forgotten all about that one.

And they are both still there. I stayed at the Luxor over Easter break.
