It would seemed Dressed to Kill is being prepared for release by Criterion. I am hoping with fixed score sound level, which is so horrible on the most recent Region 1 release.

John,

This is good news. I haven't seen that film since its initial VHS debut. Would love to revisit it.

What exactly were the scoring sound issues? Did it overpower the dialogue? Was it underpowered?

Way underpowered in the 5.1 track, and the latest release didn't include the original mono track. The museum sequence, which has such incredible scoring, is barely audible. Completely overpowered by footsteps on the floor. Other moments fare better, but it's just off with the effects overpowering the score. By the way, my favorite score from any film.

I was on the verge of ordering the UK Arrow blu but now I'll wait. I know Criterion will get it done right.

I got the UK Arrow Blu-ray because it included the original mono. The loud sound effects during the museum scene is why I sought out an alternative to the U.S. Blu-ray's 5.1 remix.

I don't mind remixes if they respect the original balance of music and effects, but the one for DRESSED TO KILL is awful.

Yeah this was a spill the beans from Nancy Allen, who probably wasnt supposed to say anything but who cares, this is going to be a great release. I have the Arrow and MGM releases, Im sure one of them will go, most likely the MGM blu ray.

The only *critique* that I have is that the film, albeit a great one, has had blu ray releases while many other films still haven't.

I love Dressed to Kill so much that I dont mind double dipping on this one again.. which is a pet peeve, studios releasing the *SOS* over and over again like Warner.

You may want to hang onto it - there are lots of great extras on that release that may not get ported over. Make yourself a combo pack with the Criterion disc for an ultimate edition :) Personally, I will keep both since the MGM Blu features the great original poster art - a welcome departure from MGM's usual crappy photoshop jobs. Actually, that release may be MGM's only use of original art for a home video release ever!

Arrow has the same extras as the MGM , save for the Keith Gordon interview. MGM has a 6 minute one, while Arrow has a 40 minute one. We'll see, it just depends on what the Criterion presentation is. Id rather they would do other films unreleased in HD .. anything from Equinox , In A Lonely Place or some classic B&W thrillers

Criterion has said that they passed on rereleasing Silence of the Lambs because they didn't think they could add anything to it, so they must think they can add something worthwhile to Dressed to Kill. Edgar Wright stopped by Criterion's offices last month, so maybe he recorded something for this (I think an Edgar Wright/Brian De Palma conversation, like the Noah Baumbach/Brian De Palma conversation on Blow Out would be a great extra.)

I like to think that this means that Criterion will also be releasing a Carrie Blu-ray, but if that were the case I'd imagine that Nancy Allen would have mentioned it in her facebook post.
