I have an older Sony Trinitron TV in a portion of our garage that has been slowly turning into a man cave for my husband and his friends. The TV is hooked up to a Panasonic 5.1 channel system (also older) along with various other components.

I just purchased a Samsung 3D Blu-Ray player for the guys, but have run into a problem. The new player only has one HDMI port and a coaxial digital audio out port. Now, the TV does not have HDMI, so I attempted to connect it to the player with an HDMI to DVI adapter (the TV does have DVI). So, I'm sure most of you could've told me what my next obstacle was going to be... Yes... The video was now working, but no sound. Argh! Along side the DVI port are the audio out jacks (rca red and white) so I was hoping the situation would be rendered once I ran those to the receiver. Still no luck. HELP please! Am I overlooking something or is this going to force me to replace something (like the TV)?

Thanks so much!

You can't run audio out from the TV to the Panasonic system because there is no audio being fed into the TV through the DVI cable (it's video only).

You need to connect the audio output from the Samsung Blu-ray player to the Panasonic surround sound system.

IF your Panasonic system has a coaxial digital audio input, then it's easy - connect the Samsung digital out to the Panasonic digital in with a standard RCA-terminated cable and you're done.

IF your Panasonic system has a digital input, but it's an optical/Toslink-style connector (will look squarish), then you will need a converter to convert the digital coaxial to optical/Toslink. Converters are easy to find at Amazon or even at a local Radio Shack (if there's still one open near you) and maybe even Wal-Mart/Target.

IF your Panasonic system doesn't have any digital inputs and instead just has analog red/white audio inputs, then you need to convert the coaxial digital to analog stereo... let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

Really, though, if you have a brand-new 3-D Blu-ray player, you should consider updating your display and sound system so that you can benefit from the features and capabilities it has.

That's a whole other discussion, though, and it may not be a priority for you.

Good luck!

I'm assuming the Panasonic AVR does not have HDMI in and HDMI out? That would solve some of the problems. Or ... need a new AVR and/or TV, as mentioned. 3D and 2D flat screens have become cheap as chips these days.
