I have a Yamaha RX-V765 receiver and have owned it for a few years now (i know its older) My problem is that all my speakers are working fine when I do the tests but I find the rear speakers are very low. I would like to notice more background noise like foot steps or background gun shots etc. I can hear stuff through the speakers if I am right beside it but when I am in the middle of the room I cant seem to hear the rears. I have tried using the microphone to automatically set up the speakers and I have tweaked it so it would add more volume to the rears but it didnt seem to help. I feel like there is a setting I dont have enabled to make the sound better.

I have Paradigm Atom Monitor v6 bookshelf speakers as my rears. Anyone have any suggestions? I have had this issue since I got this surround sound system about 5 years ago

Thank you in advance

You didn’t tell us if you’re using the receiver as 5.1 or 7.1. If you have a 5.1 set-up and you have the rear speakers connected to the “Surround Back” speaker terminals, that would probably cause the problem you’re having. (I checked the manual but couldn’t find how to set up the receiver for 5.1 or 7.1.)

If that’s not the problem, you can always go to the Set Up menu and turn down the levels of the front speakers and crank up the levels of the rear speakers (p. 54 in the manual).

5.1 or 7.1 is configured in Setup Manual Setup Configuration by enabling the right speakers. The avr should do the rest.

OP, do you have Surround Left, Right and Surround Back (6.1) set up, or just Surround Left and Right (5.1)? How are the speakers positioned and aimed? the positioning may uncover why you don't seem to hear them in the primary listening position. What are the speaker level settings?

Also ... have you run the Test Tone and speaker level adjustment while sitting in the listening position? Results?

And finally ... play a movie and ensure you're in either Straight or Surround Decoder mode, not one of the Cinema DSP modes. What kind of content are you playing to validate your settings (music, 2.0 movies, 5.1 movie)?
