My 7. 1 Home Theater (1 Viewer)

My name is Matt, and I live in Texas.

I've been piecing systems of various sizes together for years. I go back to LaserDiscs (still have mine), I purchased my first DVD player in 1996 (Toshiba SD-2006), and I jumped on the SACD bandwagon in 2001. Movies and music are my passion.

My "theater" experience was always limited by preexisting issues and obstacles. We decided to build a custom home almost two years ago, and I knew from day one that a home theater was going in.

Unfortunately, a dedicated room was not in the cards. I was forced to work within the confines of a loft. I also was burdened by the almighty budget. What I put together over the last year is something I'm pretty proud of.

I used (3) 16.4' led light strips (Amazon), and installed 5" moulding at 18" from the ceiling.

Total project cost, approximately $150.

So JUST molding nailed to the wall? Did you "block" it out to give more room? How tall are your ceilings?
This is what I want to do in our theater but leave room for running speaker cables also.

I ripped 2 x 4 lumber at 45° to create angle support blocks. I cut those into 6" sections and screwed that to every other stud at the desired height. I nailed the moulding to those, and adhered the led strip to the moulding.

I have a 10' ceiling in that room.

That's just what my guy said we should do. I sent him pics of yours. Our ceilings are basement ceilings. 7.5'. So we can't go as low as you have mounted yours. I sent him photos of yours so we can see what we plan on attempting one day.

Woodworking skills...

A lost art.

I build picnic tables every spring, custom sizes. The county I live in buys 3-5 a year for various parks(you'd think they'd hire their own county fair people to do it...).

Once dry enough(snowed 4" yesterday, then we got 2 inches of rain...) will build 16' long tables. Have my own portable crane so they can be built...then moved.

Woodworking is a large part of what I do for a living. You're right, it's an often ignored or forgotten art. I'm particularly proud of this moulding though. The ceiling pitches at the front of the theater. Matching the pitch angle, and the moulding angle was something that I took my time on.

I added a marquee to the poster frame as you come in. I can change out the sign to say whatever I want. I think it makes a statement.



I'm also doing the calculations and prep work for a star field on the ceiling. I'm looking at completing that project before May.
