Some of the best looking Blu-ray releases are of these large format films, and since all of them haven't been released on the format, I thought a list on the site would be a little useful. It's copied from Wikipedia, In70mm.com The Widescreen Museum and some other sources, but I've tried to verify those lists and have made some additions to it. Films with even some use of 65mm negatives are listed. I've marked the ones that are presently on Blu-ray. Some of the short films listed will most likely never be released on Blu-ray, but I've included what I've found due to some complaining about the comprehensiveness of the list, which will be a work in progress. I am sticking to English language films for the time being. Any additions, details or corrections are greatly appreciated. If such a list already exists on the site, please moderate.

BLU-RAY denotes that the film is available in U.S. on Blu-ray Disc

The transfers of AIRPORT---DOCTOR DOLITTLE---FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE --EXODUS are from 35mm sources I would love Universal to release AIRPORT from TODD-AO elements That will never happen. Saw it at Radio City Music Hall. Looked great in TODD-AO. Don;t know if Fox is going to release DOLITTLE and STAR! I think they should give them to Twilight Time.I know they keep asking Fox for them. Twilight Time says they have EXODUS.

Yes, I thought this may be the case with some of the titles. I'll add details to the list. Thanks.

I'd checked out that list on Wikipedia a few times, but thanks for placing it here for your fellow members. I happen to have 17 of these films on Blu-ray, and am glad that none of them happens to be one of the 4 Blu-rays that trajan pointed out, as being created from 35mm sources. But I do have Fall of the Roman Empire and Exodus on DVD.

I would include RYANS DAUGHTER. Warner Archives needs to release this.

Odd that this was left off the Wiki list. Do you know if it was a U.S. production?

Edit: Thanks RMajidi

Certainly agree with you on that, trajan. Even the DVD version of Ryan's Daughter happens to be one of the best looking examples of a movie in that format, that I've seen.

I agree. It's right up there with the Vertigo Special Edition DVD.

I join you in wishing for this David Lean cinematographic spectacle to be released on Blu asap. However, it is a British film, whereas the list compiled here is of US productions.

Lawrence of Arabia, Lord Jim, Ben-Hur, Exodus, Khartoum, Grand Prix, Cleopatra and others are not US productions.

Parts of How the West Was Won were filmed in Ultra Panavision 70mm.

The Greatest Story Ever Told started filming in 3-Panel Cinerama.

The Last Valley was not Intended to be promoted as a Cinerama film.

I've listed the titles with country of production/co-production to the best of my ability. Some are US/UK or US/Italy etc. I am listing the UK productions as well. Some of the titles I can only find listed as USA productions, but I will be glad to change/add if I'm given other information. :)

Yes there are other films partially filmed in 70mm, and I probably will add them. Another is Mackenna's Gold, which I believe was filmed mostly in 70mm.

Russian WAR AND PEACE. Mr Harris can restore that one.

Would love to see this, in its entirety, on Blu-ray. Once I feel comfortable with the accuracy of the list of English language films, I will add other international titles.

RAH, I realize that a film like Ben-Hur, for example, was made overseas, with most of its filming having been done in Italy, but since it was produced by MGM, an American company, are you actually saying that Ben-Hur is an Italian film?

What about INHERENT VICE? The list does not contain many European / Asian titles that were filmed in 70mm. There are possibly hundreds of titles missing from the list.. Also missing are the 70mm films from the 1929 / 31 era. If you want to add shorts that were filmed in 70mm, then there would be hundreds more titles dating back to the birth of cinema. Finally, don't put too much faith in Wikipedia - it is a very flawed site.
