I don't know about this one. That bit of footage (which isn't the teaser) is reminding me seriously of M:I-2. That's not a good thing.

It's reminding me of MI:4, which at least tried to get back to the TV-series "team plot" concept after the debacle of #2, but still got caught up in thrillseeker Tom climbing the building.

Here, even the poster seems to copy the exact same shot, only he's hanging onto a plane this time.

Still, think 2 was the edge of the cliff, and they're not planning to go back to all-Tom Bourne-clones completely again.

Strangely enough, over here, most people pretend MI-2 never existed, but I've seen at least two different HK comedies that iconically scene-parody Cruise throwing his exploding sunglasses at the camera...Apparently, over there, John Woo was the local boy that made good.

It wasn't originally going to come out this summer, but got moved up a whopping 6 months not that long ago.

I agree - 2 was my least favorite, and a big reason the last two really resonated with me was the return to a "team" concept.

The infiltration of The Vatican in 3 is one of my favorite sequences in the whole series.

I enjoyed the last one and this looks good. Does anybody know how much (if any) was shot in IMAX/70mm. I hope the eventual blu-ray shows any IMAX scenes by changing the AR. I was disappointed this didn't happen in Ghost Protocol.

Brian dePalma nailed the original series in the first movie--The opening fakeout, the stakeout on the embassy, the boo-yah burst of Lalo Schifirin as they start their orchestrated Team-IMF infiltration of the CIA....

Just where exactly the movie series turned into Tom Cruise's Adrenaline Weekend, think that was halfway through the first film, but that was more Robert Towne's fault than DePalma's.

And Woo, simply put, had never seen the show in his life. What he did know was pretty much what other people who have never watched the show in their lives know about it, namely that at some point it involves Martin Landau pulling off a rubber mask.

So, we got 2's plot pretty much revolving around rubber masks, including the protracted climax where we think Cruise has been taken prisoner, and we're sitting there, gritting our teeth, thinking
"Yes, they switched masks, we freakin' KNOW!--We've seen Darkman, okay? Just get the heck on with it, and put this scene out of its misery!!"

3 and 4 both tried to back away from the cliff and involve some actual team plots (the switched hotel room in 4 was a TV staple), but somebody please keep Lord Xenu away from the bungie-jumping...

If that last line is a jab at Tom Cruise's religion, it isn't funny or warranted.

I really enjoyed MI2. Thandie Newton, Lisa Gerrard, doves, front wheelie-ing a motorcycle, and Anthony Hopkins. Plus shooting a pistol while aiming via a rear view mirror, and the most obvious Last of the Mohicans "I will find you!" homage ever committed to film.

Legit.

And being a JJ Abrams production, it follows the Bad Robot formula of "It's not so hard to reboot a franchise, just plug Simon Pegg in as comedy relief--Job done!"
