Something I brought up in THE FUGITIVE thread that I thought deserved a topic for discussion:

I've noticed that when a TV series is revived in the form of a reboot, remake, or sequel, it is nearly ALWAYS on a rival network, and I believe the list is pretty extensive.

I'll start by listing a few and let others chime in with more.

THE FUGITIVE aired on ABC, it's re-airings around the time of the movie were on NBC, and the Tim Daly reboot aired on CBS.

DARK SHADOWS was a staple of ABC daytime, but the prime-time remake aired on NBC.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE aired on CBS for seven years, but its 80s reboot aired on ABC.

A recent example: THE ODD COUPLE originally aired on ABC and now a reboot has shown up on CBS.

Can you think of others?

The Lindsay Wagner "Bionic Woman" ran for two seasons on ABC, then moved to NBC for its third and final season. The Michelle Ryan "Bionic Woman" remake series returned on NBC.

"Star Trek" originally aired on NBC, as did "Star Trek: The Animated Series" but all further shows were on other networks. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" were first run syndication, and "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Enterprise" were on UPN.

While on demand episodes of all series are available through CBS, which is likely where any future Trek show will end up.

Dallas 2.0 was on TNT instead of CBS.

90210 was on CW instead of returning to Fox.

With more modern cases, it looks like it comes down to the production company.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE aired on CBS in the 50s and 60s, also later on in the reboot of the 80s. But a further 90s reboot was shunted to UPN.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT was a staple of NBC daytime and primetime, did one season on ABC and then resurfaced in the 70s as a CBS show, where it's long held reign in CBS daytime.

JAG - Aired on NBC but was cancelled after its first season, CBS picked it up and it ended up airing for a total of 10 seasons.

It also lead to spawning the highly successful spinoff series NCIS, which in turn has spun off twice of its own in NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New orleans.

Not bad for a midseason replacement.

I guess we could consider the British series THE AVENGERS, which aired in its Emma Peel/Tara King days on ABC-TV in the US. It's subsequent sequel, THE NEW AVENGERS had its US airings on CBS.

Get Smart's original series was on NBC and CBS from 1965-70 (1965-69 on NBC, 1969-70 on CBS), but went to FOX in 1995 for a flash-in-the-pan reboot w/Andy Dick and Elaine Hendrix.

Didnt Batman make the network jump between season 2 and 3?

It was talked about, but, IIRC, never done; Batman stayed on ABC throughout all of its run.

Remember, this isn't about shows that simply jump networks. It's about remakes or reboots, typically years on, that show up on different networks from the original. There are a lot of shows that simply switched networks like "My Three Sons", but I wouldn't consider the latter years a reboot, even though it almost is.

I suppose we could mention MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY, a show that bounced around ABC, CBS, and NBC over its lifetime, and then was rebooted to MAKE ROOM FOR GRANDDADDY on NBC.

The Munsters aired on CBS and the remake/reboot, The Munsters Today , was syndicated.

Similarly, Gidget aired on ABC and the sequel, The New Gidget, was syndicated.

I always found it interesting that in the 60s, STAR TREK was an NBC property, and even into the 70s, ran the animated show on the peacock network.

Then when the first movie was made and came to TV, it was a BIG EVENT SUNDAY MOVIE on ABC. It just felt wrong!
