China's monthly box office for February was $650 million, topping the total of $640 million in the U.S. And it was largely accomplished without contributions from any Hollywood blockbusters.

That is because they make better movies than Hollywood. (including Imax films) Ever tried to see a locally made Imax film in China? You have to wait weeks in order to be able to get a ticket. Also their population is massively higher than the USA. You can't compare box office takings between the two countries. It is like comparing the size of the moon (the USA) as against the size of the sun (China).. China's two main cities have 60 million residents. They have the world's largest Disneyland which is due to open in the near future. They also have the fastest trains in the world including suburban ones with a 3 minute service on all lines. Compare that with the USA! Shanghai is the cleanest city that I have ever encountered. Absolutely not a scrap of rubbish can be found on the streets. If only Americans could be so proud of their cities ,like the Chinese are. It is also safe to walk anywhere at any time.

You are right. They don't eat junk food such as popcorn.

Seems they do eat some popcorn when they see a movie in China actually...

Going to theaters to watch a movie has become extremely popular in China as the country’s middle class grows, and it’s no surprise Hollywood has made a killing by tapping into the fast-growing Chinese film market. And as production companies and Hollywood stars rake in the money, popcorn makers have also profited.
Wanda Cinemas, China’s largest network of theaters, co-founded and chaired by billionaire Wang Jianlin, who also bought America's AMC theaters, reported that its theaters made 390 million yuan, which is more than $62.5 million, in popcorn sales last year. That accounted for just under 10 percent of the company’s total returns that year of 4.1 billion yuan.

Of course, if you complain about anything they make you disappear.

I realize that your post has more to do with saying how bad Hollywood (and apparently America) is but quality has nothing to do with how much money a movie earns. If it did, bad movies wouldn't make a fortune around the world. It's not just Americans going to see crap.

And judging from the success of Transformers 4, they like worse movies than we do.

Like the USA did in South America decades ago (remember the brilliant film MISSING with Jack Lemmon?). Judge your own country first before criticising China.

Yeah, but it's such a small price to pay for "clean" cities and being able to walk safely anywhere. lol
