Disney's Big Hero 6, which just won the Best Animated Feature trophy at the recent Oscars, was an unknown to me going in, as I try to steer clear of reviews before seeing any film.

Along with Boxtrolls, it shares a spot as one of my two favorite animated features for 2014.

It's the tale of Hiro, a young teen, who is a bit ahead of himself, and his adventures, which I'll leave others to discuss.

Since it's a digital creation, the resultant Blu-ray should be perfection, and it is.

The imagery is gorgeous, and the audio is likewise, superb, with a caveat.

For those investing in Dolby Atmos, the release of Big Hero 6 is yet another message that the industry doesn't seem to be supporting the technology (which I love in theatres) for the home market.  I would have thought that Disney would have followed through a offered Atmos on BH6, but I would have presumed the same for Planet of the Apes 17.  Disney has also, as in other recent releases, held back on 3D, although as was with Frozen, the 3D Blu-ray is available in the Spanish release.

The 3D situation seems an odd move, after several of the more modern Disney animated classics were re-worked to provide the format.  Did they not sell?

A fun film that looks gorgeous on Blu-ray, albeit in non-Atmos and 2D.

Mr. Harris,

Frozen was also available as a 3D Blu-ray through Amazon.uk in English (Region Free). Who knows, maybe Big Hero 6 will follow the same release pattern.

Why Disney refuses to release these films in 3D in the USA is beyond anyone's comprehension. Particularly since they are available through Amazon.uk.

Oh, and also, I obtained the 3D Blu-ray version of Maleficent the same way. Mind you, these are legal official versions, not bootlegs.

Same here- I bought both on Ebay - the UK versions. Why oh why is Disney doing this to us USA natives? This makes absolutely no sense. I want to see this but not getting stuck with a 2D this time. These films especially Frozen were made with 3D in mind and I want to see them as they were intended, Drats.

Thank god Kiss Me Kate arrives next week- and that should be thrilling.I've seen it twice projected in 3D. The only 3D film left for me not available is Flesh For Frankenstein- and hopefully that will be a Criterion release.

As with the other titles mentioned above, Big Hero 6 will be released on Blu-ray 3D in all major markets except the US and Canada. Because the discs will be available in all three regions, they should be region-free, so you could pre-order from anywhere in the world based on price and/or foreign language requirements.

Just received this on an email from Amazon.uk.... The price listed is 19.50 (Pounds), and is pending a release date.

I've personally been frustrated with Disney's releases lately. The give us one thing in the theater (3D and Atmos) and something different (especially for those of us in North America) on Blu-ray. No 3D on Frozen, Maleficent, Planes Fire & Rescue and now Big Hero 6. As to Atmos for home theater, so far Lionsgate, and Paramount have released multiple titles including big titles like Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 and Universal and WB will be joining the fray later this month with Unbroken and Gravity (really looking forward to that one).

I was fortunate enough to hear some demos at Dolby last year and I was sold. This year I am upgrading my primary HT to Atmos. I just completed the first step, upgrading my processor to a Marantz AV7702 and am currently researching different speakers for installation overhead. I'm currently leaning towards the Atlantic Technology IC-6 OBA since I am running their 8200 series for my current seven channels. But that should be the subject of another post :)

Let's face it: Unless WB and/or Dolby have something up their sleeve(s) beyond Gravity, Dolby Atmos for the home is probably dead-on-arrival, and will soon fall to a distant second place behind DTS: X.

Dolby has had a large window of opportunity (i.e. exclusivity) and has done very little with it. If this is what Dolby can do without direct competition from the rival DTS format, then I shudder to think what will happen when both formats are available.

If you have the Starz channel, they had/have Frozen, Maleficent, Planes Fire & Rescue and probably Big Hero 6 in the future On Demand and in 3D. I know its side-by-side 3D so not 1080p per eye but, they still looked pretty good even the 138 inch wide image from my Panansonic AE8000 3D projector.

Do over 80% of American households own a 3D tv set? Nope.

Do over 80% of American households own an Atmos decoder? Nope.

...I don't know about you guys but I think Disney might be on to something here.

How do you expect people to adopt a new format if the content isn't there?

It doesn't matter, the average consumer is more likely than not unwilling to spend another couple thousand dollars for what amounts to an overrated gimmick that's more likely to give you a headache than make you go "WOW OMG 3D!" This is hardly a new problem. Hell home consumer 3D is merely the latest installment of incompetently implemented dud formats going all the way back to Discovision such as SACD, minidisc, and DVHS.

Expect 4k sets to be joining soon.

Let us also not forget the glory of 'OMG, Curved displays!!!!'

That being said, as a full adopter of home 3D, I'm quite saddened by the turn of events.

Didn't they say the same about color TV?

"They" said stereo sound on TV was just a fad, and sitcoms didn't need anything beyond mono. "They" also said HDTV would never happen. "They" are not infallible.

I'm pro-Walt but anti-Disney, and I have had that stance since August 12 of last year.

Do over 80% of American households actually own a Blu-ray player? Nope. Some people still have VCRs, and Disney movies are very likely being watched on a good deal of them. That number is also less than 80%.

Except that 3D doesn't add a "...couple thousand dollars" to the price of a set. 4K, however, does cost thousands more.

Got my "Big Hero 6" 3D from Hong Kong this week. Looks and works great (at least a brief test did...I'll be watching it this weekend.) Damn Disney cost me way more than it should have.

Not by a long shot.

Maybe Disney just didn't sell enough $45 copies of the 3D-only Oz the Great and Powerful and assumed that people weren't interested in 3D. 'Cause, you know, if people were interested, of course they'd pay through the nose just to have it (when every other studio's releases were just behind the times that way).

I would have been interested if I didn't have to give up extras to get the 3D version. They are just not very good at judging cause-and-effect, are they? If it didn't sell, it's because people felt shortchanged.

What happened to Disney's "get the 3D Blu-Ray by mail for a few dollars if you buy the Blu-Ray package" plan? My copy of 3D "Oz The Great And Powerful" fits nicely in its little paper sleeve with the other discs in the Blu-Ray case. Is anyone agitating for Disney to resume this plan?
