So I wanna start an ultraviolet collection how exactly can I do that. If like to put it on an external drive if possible or something like that so I don't have use data or something going down the road.

I recommend signing up for Vudu. You can store in the cloud and download to your PC any of the movies/shows you have.

I use Vudu to store all my digital copies (using the UV codes that come with Blu-rays) and have been very pleased with the flexibility.

Can I add them anywhere else after I add them to vudu or something? I really want something we can use going down the road in the car DVD player without data

If what you're asking is, can you burn an Ultraviolet movie to a disc the way you can burn an iTunes downloaded song to a CD, the answer unfortunately is no.

Vudu (and other Ultraviolet providers) will allow you to either stream the movie online, and/or download it to your hard drive or device. The problem right now is that there isn't a common file format between the different sites and programs and devices, so it's very difficult to download something on your computer through Vudu with the hopes of transferring it directly to another type of device. The files are copy protected, so you can't just burn into to a blank DVD.

As an example of how it works, we have the PS3 at my house, and it has Vudu. I can choose to stream the movies I own on Ultraviolet on the PS3, or I can also choose to download them to the PS3 and have them saved on the PS3's internal hard drive. But to the best of my knowledge, there's no way for me to transfer that file from the PS3 to anywhere else. If I want to watch the same movie on my iPhone, I have to stream or download it to my iPhone separately, I can't use the existing download from the PS3 on there.

You can try reaching out directly to the company that made the disc (Fox, Disney, etc) - sometimes if you can provide them with a receipt and a photo of the barcode, they'll send a new code. Unfortunately that's not a guarantee - without the codes, you may be out of luck on some or all of the titles, it depends on how the studios want to handle it. I've only had issues where I bought a disc and the code didn't work, but I still had the paper, so I was able to use that to find contact information. I don't know where one would start without the paper insert with the code, sorry.

If you USED them (which none of us ever did), and they tapped into iTunes, the registered copies might still be on your streaming iTunes, Amazon or UV account, but those were the days before paper codes. :(

With VUDU you can do "disc to digital" for a small fee. Not free, but a lot cheaper than completely buying it digitally.

+1 to that suggestion. Vudu also has a deal where if you convert ten or more titles at a time, they give you 50% off the whole order. I've done upgrades on a small percentage of my collection, and when I have, I've made sure to group them into bundles of ten or more to get the discount.

After you create your vudu account, which will create an UltraViolet account for you, you can redeem your codes directly from vudu, without the need to go through the URL on the paper insert.

https://my.vudu.com/redeem.html

Also, be sure to link your account to Disney Movies Anywhere to get a free Disney Movie! You can also redeem Disney codes on vudu.

There's usually a free-movie link deal, but not this month--

Best to keep eyes on the site, and there might be a free copy of Frozen or Big Hero 6 in April or May...Sadly, the opportunities for free Incredibles and Wreck-It Ralph have already passed by.

So now that I got this going. I saw somewhere I can download from vudu to use offline. So does that mean I can move the file to other places also?

Personally, I don't see the benefit of upgrading any of my copies via Vudu. Reason - I wanted to stream a HDX movie in my Vudu account from my iMac thru avr and view on my tv. I was prompted with a dialog screen stating " I could not view the movie due to copyright restrictions". However, it would let me view it in sd format. I say ' no thanks'

If this is how Vudu likes to play ball , I would prefer to purchase computer software and upgrade my collection myself and store on a external hard drive. I may be looking at this wrong though as there may be workarounds. Another negative, however minor is that I am unable to watch any contents of my library unless I disable my vpn.

That seems like a clunky way of setting it up. If you don't have a game console, why not just get a streaming device like a Roku stick, or a chromecast. They are cheap and support HD. You can use the vudu app on your phone to cast it to the chromecast.

Easy now...

You haven't seen chunky until you've seen my gf....just kidding

She's looking over my shoulder now...

I like chunky, it gets even chunkier as I have a external hard drive connected that I play music and videos via dpi and toslink cable run thru my avr from the iMac also. Maybe I need to upgrade some components but this has worked for me for years now w/o any drawbacks.

Okay, I stand corrected on my reasoning that I expressed earlier in my negative statement in regards to upconverting disc via UV. I noted after posting that there is a thread for opinions on the subject matter so I'll refrain from steering this thread astray. I will not be buying any more content in the near future until the content can be downloaded to a hard drive and played back w/o copyright restrictions

Okay, so I knocked the dust off, unboxed the xbox 360 and downloaded updates and the Vudu app. I then selected a HDX movie for play (Star Trek), the picture quality was good and the audio thru my surround sound was surprisingly exceptional... I thought my avr supported hdx format ??? I guess not

I think some movies on Vudu are locked out at higher resolutions for desktop playback. I noticed that for a few HDX titles that I have, they're playable as HDX on the PS3 app, but through my computer they're restricted to SD playback. Some play HDX on both the computer and the PS3. No idea why it's that why but that's been my experience.
