Hi all,

After getting off to a bad start on a new installation, I'm finally at the point where I'm ready to adjust my settings. In my other posts, you guys helped me with rear speaker placement, ARC, and reference material. All were a great help.

Here is my new question

I'm using ARC (TV to receiver). Will netflix, and my other apps decode correctly? Do I need to adjust anything on the receiver to ensure that my audio gets decoded correctly?

Same question, but the source is DirecTV?

btw- I'm using a Marantz SR5009 for my receiver.

Thanks,

Rocco

ARC can be a little temperamental if you aren't going between devices of the same manufacturer, but I've had good luck so far, both Sony/Yamaha and Samsung/Yamaha are working well. The only thing you have to do is turn on ARC in each device. (It's not always called by the name "ARC" in the menu.)

I've never heard of using ARC to connect to a non-TV (like a DirectTV box); it also doesn't make sense to me, why would the receiver need to send audio/video *to* the DirectTV box? Also, the receivers I've used have only one ARC channel, but maybe the more expensive receivers with multiple HDMI outs have multiple ARC channels.

DirecTV should have absolutely nothing to do with ARC.

Again, ARC is nothing but a replacement for Toslink, period.

Whatever your TV can send out audio wise...

ARC=Toslink.

I get that DirecTV shouldn't need to use ARC, but I've read that it is best to use ARC through HDMI. If that statement is correct, then I would think that my original question applies. why is the audio better when using HDMI over a optical cable; or is it?

btw thanks for your replies.

ARC, period, replaces Toslink. End. Of. Discussion.

HDMI is only required for lossless audio.

There. Is. No. Lossless. Audio. On. Netflix.

By the way...

DD+ is in the crosshairs.

It needs HDMI. ARC, as a HDMI spec, is identical to Toslink. Because, it is.

Samsung released all their new UHD TV "supporting" DD+.

But, there is no way, at all, to get it out of the TV. Topic has beaten to death since 2012 when Samsung started providing useless support.

It caught Netflix/Vudu in the middle. They point to Samsung as supporting a feature that won't happen(cause Samsung likes to create consumer confusion).

The only way to get DD+ is by a Roku/AFTV/ATV/BD player. Period.
