Anyone catch the season 26 premiere of The Amazing Race, where the hook is all the couples are either dating, or literally got matched up as couples to compete. Kind of interesting dynamic of watching matched up couples peel away the "nice pleasant" veneer, and become "real" as the race wears on them.

Ya know, Patrick...much like I said in my diatribe over in the thread on the season of Survivor, I think this show (winner of infinite Emmy's for Best Reality Show) doesn't need to resort to gimmicks to keep its audience tuning in.

I posit that the producers are more likely to kill off the show by screwing with it (and adding too many distractions/contrivances such as blind dates, express passes, blind u-turns) which take away from the original fun of watching people try to navigate their way around the world in a race (all while we the audience get to "see the world" in ways we rarely would--like a travelogue).

Don't screw with success.

I'm still watching, though I almost forgotten that the premiere was on Wednesday instead of the usual Friday night slot.

So far, I am not really liking the whole blind date gimmick, nor the fact that all teams are dating couples. So this could be a tough season for me to watch, as I also like watching family teams in there as well. I was not a fan of the obstacle course at the start of the race, as too much time was wasted on that and the whole dating gimmick. And of course, they had to bring back the dreaded Blind U-Turn back, and put it in the first leg. You know what, blind-anything just sucks. I guess this is making me as grumpy as Mike. ;)

So far, the only team I like, is Team New Kid. I have to give Jonathan credit, for not hiding who he was. That won major points for me.

The sake challenge was unexpectedly easier than the dance challenge at the Detour.

I guess TAR is permanently moving from Sunday to Friday night (after the premiere on Wednesday). Confusing enough?!?

I will give it a chance. Those new couples are in the "honeymoon" stage where everyone is being nice to each other...in a stressful situation like this that won't last long. I did find it interesting that the first three couples to arrive were "blind dates". I would have thought the regular couples would have had a bit of an advantage at first.

I did find it a bit annoying that Phil kept asking "Do you think you might fall in love?" Really? They have been together one day in a very stressful situation. Kind of a stupid question...even if it is to try and make interesting television.

Not crazy about the premise, but it helps that none of the couples, whether they knew each other before the race or not, have become annoying yet.

But enough with the selfies! Best part of Friday's show for me was when the couple that got eliminated was posing for one while their train pulled out of the station.

I hadn't really thought of it, but I bet the pairs are pushed to do the "selfie thing" for whatever reason for this season of the show. I wonder if they could make a case that the production team might've caused them to miss the train? Probably not...but it's just another example of how these pointless conceits built into a show like this interrupt the race itself andt distract from the whole concept of the race around the world.

My wife is sick of listening to me bark back at the TV every time one of the couple starts talking about whether or not "they'll find love" or that "they've got a nice friendship going and time will tell if it grows into something more." Puh-leeze people, I don't care. if I wanted trite nonsense like this I would...*gasp*...watch The Bachelor.

When the show zoomed on the train itself for a second, I just had a feeling that they were going to miss it.

I hope not. Reading your post, that makes me wonder if each team has to take at least one selfie in each leg. Though, I'm guessing it does not matter when during the leg, as that one team could have taken it during the train ride.

The only selfies that I want to see, are that of the locations themselves (like Japan in this case). ;)

And those noodles did make me hungry!

As much as I dislike the selfies, perhaps they will come into play in the final "memory" challenge?

When that long-time couple missed their train due to the selfie's, I just thought to myself:"Ass-clowns! Haha!" That is all. Sadly, this is what we accept for entertainment nowadays...

A lot less selfies in this leg, as they did not seem nearly as noticable as in the previous 2 legs.

Funny to see the guys in those sparkling dresses. :D

OMG, can somebody shoot Hayley?

She has got to be the most annoying nag and b**tch I've ever seen on this show. How her blind date partner tolerates her is amazing. I probably would have just quit the show, lose a chance at $1M just to get away from her.

Does she ever shut up?

Has the show been canceled and nobody told us?

Before anyone asks, yes, that is sarcasm. Ridiculous to have a break this long in the middle of a season. Won't be good for ratings.

If they had any sense...they'd gather up all those selfies that are getting taken by the teams this season and sprinkle them throughout those horrid lower-third graphics promoting other shows on the network during the March Madness games.

This has happened every year, non?
