Apple always picks a day I'm unavailable to have keynotes. This time around I'll be driving to Atlanta when they go live. In fact the only time I've been free for a keynote, they broke the internet and no one got to see it. [emoji6]

Don't feel bad. I'd have to take vacation time if I were to watch it live :) I'll watch the video that night, at home.

On another forum, just the mere mention of the Apple Watch was all it took to get the Apple haters frothing at the mouth. Some of them think the Apple Watch is going to be a complete and utter failure. We'll see.

BTW, many of those guys are the same ones that spewed negativity about the Facebook IPO. But I got the last laugh, Facebook is paying for my next car. :)

Impossible. There are enough Apple faithful that will line up in droves to make this the single most sold smart watch on the market rather quickly.

By "rather quickly" we mean one single weekend. Forget other smart watches, who have been utter failures so far: the Apple Watch outselling say Rolex will decide its real long term success.

And frankly the usual reaction coming from Apple haters has nothing to do with the Apple Watch: they were just as negative about the iPhone and iPad. We know how they keep talking out there -- heck, the iPhone and iPad are doomed people have been going at it year after year.

Lastly what may end up making Apple Watch successful are Chinese consumers, many of whom may not be existing Apple customers.

And yes, I will get one -- my existing watch broke late last year, and I decided to just wait until Apple releases theirs.

The Rolex statement is an absurd one on every level.

Of course it will sell more units this year then Rolex, price alone dictates that being true.
Long term of course the Rolex is the better value but that to is an obvious statement.

"Long term of course the Rolex is the better value" -- meaning according to you that Rolex is guaranteed to make more money in the future than Apple Watch?

Note I am not making any predictions, but you might want to look at whether people thought Apple would make more money than any other phone maker when they announced the iPhone? Or that they would make more money than all phone manufacturers put together? Or that they are number one in the money maker department in computers, tablets and portable music players?

Apple Watch may end up failing. But if they succeed, their chances of making more money than Rolex is pretty damn high. Whether it is because they sell more Apple Watch Editions, or so many more of all the different Apple Watch versions. Certainly the idea that Apple's iPhone would wipe out all mighty Nokia was greeted with laughter and derision. I fail to see what makes Rolex more powerful than Nokia was.

So much useless virbage because you totally miss the point.

The Rolex is a far better value to the individual that buys it because it will last generations and can be past down, the Apple watch, not so much.

Is that clear enough for you?
Yes, assuming that watches of the Rolex kind are still being used in a generation. Do you think that non-smartphones will still be in use a generation after the iPhone was originally released in 2007? Back then the overwhelming majority of phone were not smartphones, and I am sure that plenty of them were very nice.

Right now in 2015 the vast majority of watches are non-smartwatches. And some of them, like Rolexes are so nice they can be used for generations. But suppose smartwatches do take off. Do you really perceive that Rolex will succeed wining in the smartwatch department considering the way Nokia miserably failed in the phone department? Their watches may be every bit as beautiful, well built and lasting generations but Rolex would go down the tubes, because the next generation decides that non-smartwatch watches are useless and Rolex is incapable of writing Apple quality software?

Guys, not sure what's going on with this Rolex comparison to Apple Watch. And I may regret chiming in.

Just so you know, I'm an Apple guy through and through. I've been an iPhone user since the iPhone 4 and own nearly every iteration of iPads. And I have a couple of MacBook Pros and will soon replace my dead G5 with a new Mac Pro.

That said, I'm not sold on the Apple Watch just yet. I am also about to embark on my first Rolex purchase. I've been wanting a Rolex Submariner for about 10 years and it might happen this year. In looking at used and vintage Rolex Subs, they are fetching prices that are equal or higher then a brand new Rolex. Also the submariner is a classic model going back to the 1950's and is the watch Connery wears in the early Bond films. I've always wanted a vintage one but a new one is much better in many aspects.

There's a super Rolex fan who collects them and blogs about Rolex. He's also got a blog for the Apple Watch. There are a surprising number of people in the world who collect and wear Rolexes and Omega and other brands.

There's room for both.

Rolex, like Omega, Seiko, Ball, Patek Philippe, and so on belong to the luxury watch segment. There's always going to be a market where someone will reach a level in their lives where they will want a nice watch. And all it does is tell time.

My interest in an Apple Watch will be for sports. I like the health features so I'm curious what it will do and if it can monitor my vital signs while I go on a training ride on my road bike. So I'll keep an open mind about the Apple Watch.

Technology is changing fast! I bet at some point, smart phones and smart watches won't be around anymore and may morph into something else. But a Rolex is likely going to still be around.

Not looking forward to seeing all the "look at me!" pretencious types running around (in person or online) trying to show off their new little gadgets.

Please I hope we don't have to have a bunch of "unboxing" videos posted as well.

Ugh.

Oh, Alf....

I'll try not to post any unboxing videos and I am certain you and I won't bump into each other while I'm showing off my new little gadget.

There's a thing I recently discovered on the watch forums. Wrist shots! There will likely be plenty of photos showing up in posts of the Apple Watch on the wrists of owners and in various locations too like in a fancy car or on the beach. :)

I guarantee you there will be legions of unboxings and almost UN-stomachable pretentiousness flaunting of these guys. It's fashion after all, that's the whole point.

I still don't know if I want one at all. I've funded two smart watches on Kickstarter mostly as a form of encouragement to interesting ideas more than actual desire to put one around my own wrist. I guess it depends on how much the steel one ships at. If it's $750 or less I will have to think hard about it. More than that and I am probably out for first gen.
