I noticed that CBS has gone on a complete series craze as of late. Since last November they have begun releasing complete series sets and so far through May they will have released 15 complete series collections. It appears they have shifted away from new releases to just re-releasing previously released content?!

Just for fun, I decided to compile a list of all the releases to see how many they end up releasing. These are the releases so far:

November 2014

Beauty and the Beast (re-packaged)
Charmed (re-packaged)
Family Ties (re-packaged)
Taxi

December 2014

Mork & Mindy

March 2015

Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.
Ghost Whisperer

April 2015

The Brady Bunch (re-packaged)
Frasier
MacGyver (re-packaged)
Matlock
JAG (re-packaged)

May 2015

Cheers
The Fugitive (re-packaged)
Rawhide
Walker, Texas Ranger
The Wild, Wild West (re-packaged)

June 2015

Laverne & Shirley
The Odd Couple

October 2015

Mission: Impossible (re-packaged)

November 2015

I Love Lucy (re-packaged)
Star Trek (re-packaged)

February 2016

The Andy Griffith Show (re-packaged)
Sabrina, the Teenage Witch
Touched by an Angel

March 2016

Hogan's Heroes (re-packaged)

May 2016

Have Gun, Will Travel
The Untouchables

September 2016

Friday the 13th: The Series
Tales from the Darkside

October 2016

Perry Mason

November 2016

The Lucy Show

April 2017

Hawaii Five-0 (re-packaged)

May 2017

Mannix
Vega$
The Streets of San Francisco

June 2017

Becker
Father Dowling Mysteries

November 2017

Dynasty

November 2017

7th Heaven

February 2018

Bosom Buddies
Duckman
The Guardian
War of the Worlds

June 2018

The Invaders

Other series that may see a complete series at some point:

Beverly Hills, 90210 (re-packaged)
Melrose Place

It appears as though they have taken notice of how much success Shout! Factory is having by going the complete series route. However, if they want to follow Shout! then I thnk they should release complete series sets of stalled shows not re-release stuff that has already been released before. Here are some suggestions for them as to what shows should see a complete series set:

Brooklyn Bridge
The Love Boat
Our Miss Brooks

Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, Bonanza, Gunsmoke & Happy Days should continue as season sets IMO since they have already released several seasons of the first two shows and more than half of the last three. Fans would be very angry if they just stopped and put out a complete series set.

Not only that but purposefully repackaging them without bonus content from earlier unshelf friendly complete series. The WWW announcement should stand for WHY WHY WHY? Without the bonus disc there is no reason to do this because the original releases weren't unshelf friendly. They should indeed be unstalling some titles, not resorting to these kinds of stunts.

I've love it if Paramount decided to release all of "Dynasty" in a big box. Would look pretty nice on my shelf, next to Shout's upcoming "Colbys" box set.

"Laverne & Shirley" would be good too. I'm actually in the market for a new set of Season 1, and I've yet to buy seasons 6-8, so a complete set would definitely sway me.

I think with Laverne & Shirley having finished on DVD less than a year ago, and with Happy Days a ways away from completion (A potential marketing opportunity bringing out both simultaneously), I wouldn't be surprised to see them hold off on it until later on.

But then again, we already have a complete season release for a multi-season Happy Days spin-off. But thankfully, this one hasn't lost one of its main stars, which I suspect may of accelerated plans there with Mork & Mindy.

I think all the complete series repackaging is just another sign that CBS is on the way out of the classic TV on DVD market and are just going for a last cash grab on titles already done. Any new titles that they do release are highly unlikely to be complete series but single or split seasons as they have always done.

My sentiments precisely! It would have been better if they would have released the two telefilms as a separate release for those of us who bought the individual season sets as they were released.

I believe the reason they are omitting the bonus disc from the releases that came with one, is to lower the cost. These are supposed to be 'budget friendly', no-frills releases, with just the episodes and basic packaging.

On another note, I wonder what they plan on releasing in the second half of the year, which is when most complete series sets are released for the Christmas shopping season?!

These are probably partly aimed at warehouse stores like CostCo and Sam's Club, some of the last bastions of brick and mortar retail for DVDs. They fit in with the model of volume buying that those stores promote.

It's hard for me to imagine who would pick a 59-disc set as their first dip into the eight seasons of Rawhide, though!

As a major fan of this show, who has wanted it for a long time on DVD, please note, I would not be angry at all. In fact, I would be so delighted I would stomp a spell (especially if season 1 was remastered)!

When the bonus material is just one disc I'm not sure why it would be any more costly to just include it in these sets.

These large sets are mostly aimed at Christmas and gift-shoppers. They make good stocking stuffers.

I'm still confused about the packaging.

I've read the discs are held on page-style flippers, but they are not attached to the outer case?

How does the disc holder stay secure inside the case when it's closed?

Warner Bros has me a little concerned at this point as well. They usually go on a hiatus through the holidays but they have come out of the gate very slow this year. One classic release (Bronco) so far this year 2 months in???? Hopefully they aren't following CBS's lead.

CBS/Paramount will now be known to me as Mill Creek Jr. What a waste with all that good stuff stalled.
Totally agree. I'm still waiting for more releases of The Love Boat.

Probably the outer box is a cardboard slipcase - with plastic boxes inside.

If the disk content is the same as before, that seems unfair (not additionally compressed as with Mill Creek). I think it's also true that if these sets sell well, it will suggest that getting complete series sets of other shows. I hope these sell great, and I would really like a complete set of HGWT (in addition to TBH of course).

Mill Creek has been improving their game in the last few years. Discs quality is light-years better and they've been very good with handling the Sony properties.

Even when DVD releases were great and in their prime studios have always been slow out of the gate the beginning of each year. Warner Brothers just merged their two websites and there was a holiday so that's 2 weeks of no releases. We should start to see a steady stream of releases from them starting in March.
