Extremely NSFW, just as a heads-up:
THIS IS FUCKING GLORIOUS.
Got sent a link to this late yesterday by a buddy of mine -- this short might end up being the next Too Many Cooks.
This is directed by Joseph Kahn (who helmed the incredibly-underrated Torque and the great, little-seen Detention), and is a heavily hyper-violent, nudity-filled "reboot"/satire of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, which takes the "mythology" of the TV show, everything awful about modern fan-films and studio reboots, casts Katee Sackhoff and James van der Beek, and dials everything up to fucking 11.
Even the casting of this is like a massive jab to these types of real-life projects -- Katee Sackhoff is probably the most over-fancast person on the Internet, so landing her is a real coup. And taking van der Beek and turning him into the scarred-up bad guy speaks to the continual need to "grit up" silly shit from the past.
I was already deep into high school when this show first premiered back in 1993, so I was already far past the target Power Rangers age-group, but I can almost imagine a lot of those fans absolutely hating this short. Watching Bulk & Skull murder Jason while laughing about it and then OD'ing on meth...that's probably like watching Winnie the Pooh get drunk, grab an AK-47, and going postal on the Hundred Acre Wood. Even if meant in jest, it's still kinda horrifying.
It's so clearly obvious that he's taking the piss out of every grim fan-fiction of your favorite childhood show. The fact that he does it with a (mostly) straight face makes it hysterical.
