Taking the kind advice of a member of this forum, I bought a home theater system for my new TV and tried to connect them, along with my DVD recorder/player and satellite receiver. I tried to connect them in series: satellite receiver to DVD recorder to AV receiver to TV, thinking I could then record whatever appears on screen. That didn't work.

So I found an online site that offered a hook up diagram for the four devices, instructing me to connect the satellite receiver to the TV then the DVD recorder to the satellite receiver. The AV receiver connected to the TV. I still can't get the home theater system to work when watching TV, such as a Netflix movie streaming in via ethernet cable connected to the TV.

After reading the manuals, I became so confused and mentally exhausted that I gave up. So I drew the back of each device and attached them to this post, hoping someone will lend me a hand...tell me how to connect the four devices. I have all the cables, HDMI, toslink, component, and composite.

The major problem is...

You can't ask the Directv STB to provide you HD and be able to record SD...at the same time.

There are no, none, not a single STB anywhere, from any provider, that can do that.

Your best bet is to get a 2nd STB in SD and connect it to the DVD recorder.

Or. Get a DVR. Directv has a program, at Directv.com that allows you to put DVR'd content on your computer, that you can then burn to disc. Provided the content isn't copy protected.

Thanks for replying. I really don't mind the restriction of being prohibited from recording from TV as was possible with the old TV. My main interest is in being able to use my home theater system with the TV. A HDMI (ARC) connection fails, so does the toslink connection. Using a component cable also failed (5 wires). But I'm able to hear sound from all five speakers when using the AV receiver in radio mode. Can somebody look at the diagrams I posted and tell me what else I can try? Click on the diagrams to see them more clearly.

I'm confused as to what you're unable to accomplish. Is the main problem now getting audio from the Smart TV Apps to play through the surround system? Are you not getting ANY audio, or are you trying to get full surround sound audio? Please clarify.

You mentioned that ARC didn't work (no big surprise - ARC is crap and hardly ever works). You also mentioned that the TVs Toslink didn't work - did you verify that there was a signal being sent (i.e. a red light at the end of the optical cable)?

It's not unheard of for the audio from a TVs smart features to be 'trapped' in the display and not output via any means. I know it's hard to imagine, but that's the case with some displays. I don't know for sure if yours is one of them...

Get this working first:

Satellite Direct TV Box:

- Coax Cable from dish does into Sat IN on left hand side of DirectTV box

- HDMI output from DirectTV box connects to Yamaha HDMI 2 input - using shortest HDMI cable available to get the job done.

- HDMI Output from Yamaha connects to HDMI In 1 on Samsung TV - using shortest HDMI cable to get the job done.

— Ensure that the Direct TV box is outputting over the HDMI cable — look for setup and ensure that this is turned on *(should be on by default - but not always)

— Then - to watch TV:

- Turn on DirectTV box
- Turn on Receiver - input selection to HDMI 2
- Turn on TV - input selection to: HDMI 1

— Philips DVDR hookup: For the DVD player:

- Audio:
Coaxial cable connection - from Philips Digital Audio out Coaxial to Yamaha AV2 Coaxial connection

- Video:
Use Component Video output - using 3 component video cables - connect Output of Philips DVDR Component Y, Pb, Pr to input of Yamaha AV2 - Y, Pb, Pa

— Now you have a digital audio signal coming from the DVR to the recover.

- Setup the DVR to output digital audio in the setup
- Set the receiver to input AV2

- Turn on TV - input selection to: HDMI 1

That should get the picture over the HDMI connection used earlier - and the sound from the digital output

— Philips DVDR hookup: For the VCR: (assumes you still watch VCR tapes)

- Audio:
Philips EXT 2 - VIDEO OUT — AUDIO OUT L/R to Yamaha AV5 Input L/R - using 2 RCA cables

- Video:
Philips EXT 2 - VIDEO OUT - RCA video to Yamaha AV5 Input Video - using 1 RCA cable

— Now you have analog audio signal coming from the DVR to the recover.

- Set the receiver to input AV5

- Turn on TV - input selection to: HDMI 1

That should get the picture over the HDMI connection used earlier - and the sound from the L/R output

To have smart TV audio out of receiver:

- Connect TV to your network via LAN cable

- Connect TV Optical Output to Yamaha - AV1optical input - via optical cable

- Turn on TV

- Turn on Yamaha - set input to AV1

Ensure TV is set to ouput digital signal....

Sorry to divide this up into 4 parts - but thought it would be easier to track down each input/output/signal 1 at a time -- get 1 working, then go on to the next...eventually they should all be working...

Yay! I got the TV, Netflix and Yutube to work, and the sound is nice. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

But I could not get the video player to work. Previously, I had the Philips DVDR connected to the component output of the DirectTV box, and that worked; but that setup required use of the TV speakers. Maybe I did not follow the instructions properly. Here's what I did:

1. Connected Philips "Digital Audio Out/Coaxial" to Yamaha "AV2/Coaxial."
2. Philips "Component Video Out" (Y, Pb, Pr) to Yamaha "AV2 In" (Pr, Pb, Y).
3. Yamaha receiver set to HDMI1 and AV2.
4. Turned on TV -> selected input selection as HDMI1 -> no picture or sound.

I could not find any digital audio output option in Philips DVDR setup screens or anything similar. Maybe this is the problem. Any suggestions?

2 things you can try...

Of the steps you mentioned - did not figure this one out:

"3. Yamaha receiver set to HDMI1 and AV2."

The receiver should be set to AV2 for both audio and video inputs -- not sure why HDMI1 is mentioned here - but that is an input that you are not using for the recorder. You are using the analog inputs for AV2.

So the receiver should be set to the AV2 input only - think you are telling it to get the video from HDMI1 and the audio from AV2...

Need to check if your receiver will convert the component video into hdmi output...if it does not, you may need to run component video output cables from the receiver to the TV...

Also note - looking at your picture - it seems that the digital audio will only come from the DVD player - so use a DVD to test this out. If you are running a VHS tape it looks like you have to use analog connections.

That did the trick. I connected a component cable from the DVD player to the TV, leaving the audio connected to the AV receiver. Now I can watch TV, Netflix, Youtube, play DVD and VCR, using surround sound.

Thank you soooooo much for your kind patience. I wish you the best imaginable.
