It's not wrong, but sometimes the receiver assumes you're coming in as HDMI, so you have to go in and tell it you're using a different input. Although on other receivers there's just a button (remote and/or receiver) that says 'Optical' (sometimes it's a button that says 'Input' and rotates through the ports).
Most AVR are defaulted to analog. Assume you used an audio input, say "CD".
That input, you have to go into "set up" and attach the optical to said input.
Every AVR works this way. Download the manual if you don't have it.
