All things come (eventually) to those who are patient! I wasn't about to get the expensive box set for just those two titles. Now I just have to wait 3 more months. Thank you, Universal!

1941 is a must buy for me. What a gigantic failed masterwork.

Ghostbusters was a good reason to give Dan Aykroyd a big budget for his scripts. Most of his other movies are not.

(And Always could have had a good movie in it if Spielberg hadn't squandered away all his sentimental WWII-flyboy urges on that Amazing Stories episode.

As even Richard Dreyfus observes, nobody cares about Fire & Rescue pilots, and we have a recent example to prove that.)

Always is perhaps his most unabashedly sentimental work to date, and the romantic fantasy nature of the film justifies it perfectly. IMO not only is it good, but also one of his best.

Agreed! But Spielberg's biggest tear-jerker to date is 'The Color Purple'. Absolutely phenomenal film and one a WHOLE lot of people have never seen!

This is one movie I hated (except for the performances) for being manipulative and for the story being so full of plot implausibilities, imo. I do own the BD, though. I also saw it upon first release.

Huh? It was incredibly popular when it was released in 1985 grossing over $200 million in adjusted dollars. And it was nominated for 11 Oscars (although it won none). So I would say a whole lot of people have seen it. And certainly more than poor Always.

My problem is, I want all of 'em EXCEPT Jaws and Jurassic, which I got already, which works out to just marginally cheaper if I spring for the set. MY wallet hurts.

Note to Thomas, Post #17: From the review at Bluray.com: "1941 is included on Blu-ray in both its 119-minute theatrical version and the 146-minute extended cut that first appeared on Universal's 1996 Signature Laserdisc. The longer version restores many individual scenes that are both good in themselves and help connect the film's 'plot', to the extent it has one. But the basic story and the major sequences are identical in both versions and the discussion below applies to both."

Personally, I didn't much like Color Purple, but inmho, the flaws of the film are directly traceable to the book, which is an appallling mess, unhistorical, ill-informed, and just badly written, bad prose. I feel that Spielberg did the best he could with a weak property.

I LOVE ALWAYS and I don't understand why most people don't like it at all..

I just got the box so I won't buy the individual release, but i wish i could because I also LOVE the cover!

Spencer Tracy was earnest, Richard Dreyfuss is smug.

And the "It was better with war pilots" thing has already been covered, but like A.I., it's a case where Spielberg cares enough to make it self-indulgently mushy, but not enough to make it subtle.
