Has anyone gotten, or tried to get a new SS number, due to Identity Theft? Did they give you a hard time about doing it? Are you happy you did it? Thanks.

No one? Someone stole my daughter's SS # years ago and has opened numerous accounts, loans, etc. SS recommended she does not get a new # but the police investigator says she should.

I was hoping someone here had some advice. Thanks.

As far as I read and looked into, it's nearly impossible to do such a thing.

I'm sure it can be done, but I'll bet it's a major nightmare unless your in WitSec

I've heard that it's possible, but I don't know anyone who's actually done it. Good luck, whichever way you go. If you're still having problems and have been for years, then I'd give it a shot. I'm sure the SSA won't make it easy but if you have good reason I'd hope they would help.

A neighbor got one but it actually caused more headaches. Remember your true credit history is tied to the old number and sometimes it is difficult to transfer the information over to the new number.

The SSA actually has some good information available about what you should do if an identity thief has been using your number.

Here's a tip for parents that I saw a few nights ago on TV. Since your kids need to have a number when born their numbers often get abused since it years before they actually need it for credit or employment reasons. Of course you can't freeze their credit until they have a credit record so what to do? Have a card issued from one of your credit card accounts in their name, this establishes a record that can then be froze. So if some steal the social number they won't be able to open any accounts with it.
