My equipment is older than the hills and I am far behind the times with knowing what's what, but was wondering if the rear surround speakers of today's hometheater systems have a stereo signal going to them, not mono (like my DSP-E492).

Here's a pic of some of my stuff from a few years ago. I still have all of my core Yamaha components, having bought them brand new many moons ago (when I was stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany) and still would like to continue using them, as they have been incredibly reliable and solid performers. The cool little dvd player is replaced by a PS3 and the Realistic speakers are now my surrounds.

I really like the DSP-E492 as it offers a lot of flexibility (it lets me run seperate amps to the center channel speakers and the surrounds, which I do), but it is really long in the tooth and I wish I could find something newer to replace it with, while keeping my M-80 and C-80 in my system.

Anyway, here's an old pic of some of my dinosaur stuff. Looking for any thoughts/suggestions what I can do, short of swapping out my beloved Yamaha seperates. Oh, tv I'm using is old, too........73" Mitsubishi, although it has been a good one.

Yep. AC3(which became Dolby Digital) 20 years ago introduced discrete rear channels.

That 492 is NOT mono rear channel by the way.

20 years ago?? lol Well good, that means I'm right on schedule with my gear. :)

It says "Dolby Surround" and "Pro-Logic" on my 492.........does not have AC3 or Dolby Digital on it.

Come to think of it, I guess I do have a "Dolby Digital" receiver, a Technics SA-DX950, but I use that to run my rear surround speakers (use a Yamaha RX-500U to run the two small Yamaha 3 way center channel speakers).

I also picked up for cheap (50 bucks) a mint Yamaha DSP-A3090 processing amp a couple years ago, but not sure what to do with it.

I'm not looking to "keep up with the Jones," since being a (bottom) feeder pilot doesn't make me enough money to do that. I am ok with older gear, whether it's my stereo, snowmobiles, cars, etc, but, I do keep my stuff in exceptional condition.

I don't even have cable at my house, nor internet. I simply use my stereo stuff for watching a few movies once in a while, and that's about it.

Also run a 12" Dayton DVC sub driven by a 250 watt plate amp. It does ok. And a couple base shakers in the couch. I really take to the extreme, "hifi" on the cheap. lol I'm not interested in Wifi and all the other stuff that's built into modern receivers, but it would be nice to find a way to upgrade my system, on the cheap.
