LATE FOR DINNER (1991) - WD Richter's follow-up to BUCKAROO BANZAI is a quirky take on the old tale of waking up in a future situation. Written by Mark Andrus (AS GOOD AS IT GETS), it's the story of two brothers-in-law on the lam in the early-60s who go into a deep freeze only to awaken in the early 90s.

The film stars Peter Berg and Brian Wimmer as the two outlaws, and Marcia Gay Harden and Colleen Flynn as two women who were left behind. Janeane Garofolo makes her big screen debut it a bit part.

Although he wasn't the screenwriter, Richter's quirky sensibilities are on display here. It's an offbeat sci-fi tale with some amusing turns on time-travel style bits where the sleepers confront the modern world.

The studio had no idea how to sell this, and kind of went for a bland romance/Back To The Future angle. It has become a bit of a cult film now (nowhere near as large as BANZAI's) and it's a worthy discovery.
I was lucky to see a revival screening with Richter there to bask in the attention and applause. Belated, but, he sure seemed happy about it.
