It amazes me sometimes how 30 year old or more films can be released on blu that I didn't know existed.

I haven't seen it, it's probably a lark, but I'd so much prefer to have the original 1945 b/w Gainsborough film. The lovely wicked Margaret Lockwood, & that smooth rotter James Mason.

That's just it. It should be, but it isn't. It tries very hard to be a tongue-in-cheek romp but i's sloppy, labored and tedious. This was a notorious bomb (and mid 80's HBO staple) that was representative of Dunaway's really odd "choices" in the wake of MOMMIE DEAREST. She turns up the camp to 10, which seems like the only thing the most fascinating actress of the previous decade was capable of at the time (ever see Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford as EVITA PERON? shudder) but that's the sum total of her whole performance.

An excerpt from Vincent Canby's scathing New York Times review:
Miss Dunaway, who never comes onto the screen without looking as if she's wearing the film's total budget, plays Lady Barbara as she might be played by the Joan Crawford we saw in her ''Mommie Dearest.'' It's not only that she displays no comic gifts whatsoever, but that she appears to be learning how to act in some neo- primitive manner. Lust is registered by a tight-lipped smile. A single raised eyebrow is puzzlement; boredom is elevated surliness, and when an idea is supposed to be forming inside her head, her eyes pop out dangerously, as if being displaced by a foreign substance.

Granted, I haven't clapped eyes on this in about 30 years (until now it's been pretty much MIA) and I'd be curious to see if it's as much of a mess as I remember. It's hard to believe there isn't SOME entertainment value to be had in that great supporting cast but then again we should never underestimate the mediocrity of Michael Winner.

Saw this (once) on HBO in the 1980's.....Marina Sirtis' full frontal was the highlight of the film, which should tell you something.

Ah yes, just your average 18th century wench with bikini shaped tan lines!!

Fall of 1983 had many camp classics and duds on its schedule. We also had Rumblefish, The Lonely Lady, Amityville 3D, A Night in Heaven, and others. It was an atrocious Fall
