Any word on when a BR of Open Range will be released ?

If the guns in the regular DVD version w/DTS 5.1 sounded as good as it did then, I can't imagine how much more better the guns will sound on the lossless audio track on the BR will sound.

Thanks

I know I sound like a broken record, but this has a gorgeous region B Blu release in Europe (Germany). Has a Costner commentary.

This topic has already been done to death in umpteen threads on this site. Here's a good one:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topic/305362-open-range-french-blu-ray-all-region-or-not/

The upshot is: nothing's yet changed and there's no sign whatsoever of a US BD. The German BD is easily the best of the lot - it really is pretty fantastic. Apart from the AV it has every single extra feature available and is completely English-friendly.

If you don't have or aren't willing to acquire a system capable of playing other regions' discs, you're just going to have to be very, very patient...

The French release is region free but has poor picture quality according to someone in the thread that Brenty linked. Does anyone have any further info on the French Blu-ray?

I have the French release. The PQ is very good in my eyes.

Edit:

I looked at the German forum cinefacts.de, where I got my information about the German BD:

(The bold part was the reason I bought the French BD).

Schade. Dann bleibt die französische im Regal.

in English via google translate:
I just compared the French and German Blu-Ray.

Pale colors and less contrast image (I used the beginning and the shoot-out as a comparison). The original sound is much less dynamic and diverse voices unusually shrill.
What A Shame. Then there is the French on the shelf.

Another quote:
Man merkt z.b.
in English via google translate:
...in the scene where Charlie tells from his time as a soldier:

In the original sound of the babbling brook leisurely thunders, as if he were a raging waterfall, in German there is only a subtle noise to be heard.

I got tired of waiting for Disney to do the right thing with this film and

went with an Import.

I also poured over countless reviews between the French and German version.

Each have their strong points and each have minor weaknesses.

In the end, I went with the German release and was VERY pleased.

Thanks for the replies. I did a quick Google search and the most common criticism of the French BD was that the color had a yellow tint compared to the other versions. A few posted that the audio had a slight speed up while others didn't notice. One comment complained that the special features wouldn't play, and another that the movie itself didin't have forced French subtitles but the special features did.

Thanks AshJW for your post and comments. I'm glad to read you like the French version and I will probably buy it too as it seems to be my only option for a region free release. It will cost me $29.07 including shipping in Canadian dollars to order it from Amazon France. I will think about it for a couple of days.

You're welcome.

I didn't noticed a speed up or the yellow tint, though I didn't have another source for comparison.

I wonder, that nobody who has the German BD noticed the sound issues I posted above from the German forum. Maybe it isn't that much like it sounds in the quotes.

The 3 or 4 direct threads I can find say the opposite -- that the German Audio is a bit louder/boosted compared to the French. Almost everyone says the French is a bit yellow compared to the German, but either the French is oversaturated and blown whites or the German has subdued saturation and less vibrant (depending on your preference). For those that have compared audio pitch of the DVD.HDNET to the BD's, the French does seem to have a bit of a pitch issue -- one post actually ran them side/side and found the French finished well before the German (though it was less than a minute so that's nowhere near the old 4% PAL DVD speed issue)

I can't tell if you are quoting the same reviewer in both statements, but that would make me believe user issues might be the audio problem.

Watched the French Blu-ray on the weekend. I only have the old DVD to compare which is apples and oranges. The color on the BD is a bit saturated and there is definitely a yellow tint. It is darker than the DVD. The audio is fine.

A very good movie and I'm glad I bought the BD even though it isn't perfect, and I would recommend it to people that are region locked in North America.

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I was showing the Blu-ray - (I forget which version I have) to someone and wanted them to hear how cool the gun shots are. There was an echo to the sound with very little bass. It's not how I remember it. My son reminded me that he has the DVD that has the great gun shots in it. Why did they screw up on the sound on the Blu-ray?

It's a good one, arguably a better film than DANCES WITH WOLVES. In any case, it's been sadly neglected in the U.S. Advice if you admire this film: Go Region Free.
