Imitation Of Life (1959) is one of my all time favorite films and I've seen it so many times I've lost count. I've seen it on the big screen, TV and home video and I've yet to see a fully pristine print (including a "restored" version I saw at the Academy). I suspect it just may be the film stock used at the time. Which is a roundabout way of saying, I'm not holding my breath about the quality of the upcoming blu. I just may hold off till I read the reviews but I suspect while it (hopefully) may look the best it's ever looked, it still won't "sparkle". I'd love to be proven wrong.

Cross posting this from another thread:

Universal has done a brand new 4k of Sirk's Imitation of Life which is now playing at Film Forum. Elephant France is supposed to be releasing the title sometime this year but given past performance there's no guarantee it will be the new 4k. more likely the image compromised edition released in Germany.

A 4k of this should be a perfect fit for Criterion but no word on that nor indeed MoC in the UK (I think Craig Keller would be happy to do it but Universal/Canal seems to bypass MoC these days.).

Now the question is: is this from the new 4k?

The 2-Movie Special Edition DVD of "imitation Of Life" that Universal released in 2012 is a very good package. The prints for both movies are nice and clean, each movie has a commentary track, and there is a half-hour documentary about both films, along with trailers. The Blu-Ray should be splendid.

Just noticed that the back cover (from Amazon) shows an aspect ratio of 2.00:1 for the 1959 version. That's a switch from the DVD which was 1.85:1, but also correct as I believe that Universal did use a 2.00:1 house ratio for a period of time.

A nice upgrade - hopefully this won't be the same problematic transfer of the '59 version that was released in Germany last year.

I don't think that German BD release was from Universal so I don't know where that transfer was derived from.

The Hanse Sound German BD could only have been licensed from Universal. The Germans are meticulous about all this. Why do you think otherwise Robert (curious?) IMO the problems with it arise from the authoring and the encode HanseSound did, not the master supplied.

The Back cover suggests the 59 version MIGHT be from the new 4k but why on earth wouldn't you be plastering this all over the cover if it was? Why just sneak it out?

We all wait....

Because like others that have imported many titles outside of Region A, not all of these companies releasing such titles are equal in the PQ of their releases. I don't know much about Hanse Sound so I do wonder about the PQ of their product. If the issue is the authoring and encode with that release then hopefully, Universal will improve upon that.
