Splendid news!

As this discussion forum is (painfully) aware I am a B-I-G fan of THE INVADERS (ABC 1967-68) tv series so naturally this Roy Thinnes late 1960s SF Space epic has definite appeal.

Here's also hoping for COLOSSUS THE FORBIN PROJECT (1970) utilizing a fully restored and digitally remastered anamorphic (enhanced for 16x9 tvs) video transfer as well.

And while I'm at it how about a bluray edition of THE INVADERS?!

As a big fan of the series U.F.O. and all of Gerry Andersons work I'm also delighted and very surprised to see this excellent and underrated movie being released on blu ray

You know, you only double dip when you don't have it in your collection. For some reason I have 2 of these in SD, one from 1998 @ 101 mins., not sure if it's anamorphic from Universal/Image. The second one is from 2008 @ 102 mins., anamorphic from Universal, both 1.85:1.

It was just announced (in another discussion thread) that SILENT RUNNING (1972) is also scheduled for a bluray upgrade so can FAHRENHEIT 451 (1966) be far behind?

All great upcoming releases and let's hope that Universal Studios Home Entertainment extends itself to (at the very least) including the original theatrical trailers as bonuses.

Boy, Julie Christie was gorgeous. Are we ever going to get Shampoo? (Twilight Time, somebody?)

And not to appear greedy, but I'd like to see Fahrenheit 451 released to Blu-Ray this year, too.
A quite beautiful print of this is available on Blu-ray from Koch in Germany. Yet another title of hundreds and hundreds that should convince all of you to have region-free players...what's holding you back, other than an initial $200.00 expenditure? The discs themselves cost little more (including shipping) than the majority of U.S. catalog releases.

Much of the time they cost less, and that's including shipping.

Oh...maybe because I have a $500 blu-ray player that once was region free but no longer is due to needed firmware upgrades to support other disks (besides it does everything else I want). At this time I just don't trust the ability to remain region-free, I don't want to have to get a new player every few years to support it, and I don't care for the possibility of having a number of disks around that might be unplayable at some point, no matter how cheap they are. Especially, since I have plenty of content to watch until a region A release comes about, and when it does there is no need to deal with region-free hassles. Those are very good reasons for me.

Now for DVD's, I have no issue with it and own many disks from other regions. The difference there is that the idea of DVD players needing firmware upgrades is practically non-existent, and the "crack" is a one time thing, where as, blu-rays have the ability to change and add new protection capabilities all the time.

If you have a region-free player that has been hardware modified, firmware updates will have no effect.

I assume by hardware modified you mean adding in a hardware component to circumvent the region enforced capability. My Oppo BDP-83 hack was based on such a hardware MOD. However, it apparently still relied on some aspect of the firmware coding to be a certain way to work correctly, and that support was removed during a firmware upgrade.

So I think it may be premature to assume ALL hardware modifications are safe from firmware updates.

Probably best to just have 2 players, a Region A and a Region B, as I have. My Region B was once a multi-region but it strangely became Region B after only a few months of use.

As regards Fahrenheit 451 in Germany, I am reluctant to buy because as soon as I do, a Region A will be announced. Besides, I want all of the bonus features on the DVD to be ported over, and I'm not certain that's the case with the German BD.

Does your region "B" player have a direct connect for getting updates? It could be that a firmware upgrade impacted its region-free capability as well.

I have thought about the idea of purchasing a Region "B" player as a way of avoiding the whole region-free MOD approach. And I may someday. What I think people miss some times when they make these general statements about how easy it is and why doesn't everyone do it, is that they forget that for many there may be other dependencies involved. In my case, i have other dependencies that would require the upgrading of other equipment that far exceeds $200.

My UK Panasonic Bluray recorder has a firmware upgrade for its multi region capability . Although it has smart tv features and is connected to the net the auto update feature has been switched off . Not had any problems yet .
