Here it is for UK theatrical release February 17th:

http://www.theguardian.com/film/video/2015/jan/26/tales-of-hoffman-exclusive-trailer

Glad to see they've gotten the color timing right, with real green/turquoise for Ludmilla and Bobby's makeup, and real Helena Rubinstein lippy for Ludmilla (but not Bobby.) Finally we can discard the mistimed DVD abortion from Criterion/Cana.
Pity no extras including the cut footage indeed. BD order for March 13 at amazon.co.uk

I didn't even feel the need to cross my fingers, the people doing these restorations are so totally reliable you just know you're on the high ground. I've had this preordered since November!

EDIT:

I've just had this reply to my post yesterday on the Guardian website/commentariat:

"ID452885

I worked on the restoration, and can happily report that I spent months seeking out missing material, and found a previously lost 35mm reel which consists of a duet between Antonia & Crespel, a duet between Crespel & Franz, and an aria by Franz. The curtain calls at the end of the film have also been reinstated. Not quite everything, but some of it!"

This is extremely encouraging and I have asked the poster to confirm the new running time.

It's been confirmed to me the new restoration of Hoffmann now runs 134 minutes (not quite complete but almost!). The restorers were able to complete the work from a "missing" 35mm reel and original three strip Onegs, so the new footage is described as pristine.
Can't wait!

From that description, at least the Antonia act will be complete. It was the most severely cut. I wonder if the 134 minutes includes the curtain calls?

Yes, I quote his post to me on the Guardian website:

"a duet between Antonia & Crespel, a duet between Crespel & Franz, and an aria by Franz. The curtain calls at the end of the film have also been reinstated."

Well perhaps the BBFC viewed a PAL speed DVD checkdisc, not the BD.

Time will tell, but thanks for the confidence.

since you actually talked to someone involved, I'll just go with what you were told. Run times are notoriously mis-reported in all kinds of journals.

Yes they sure are Bruce, although BBFC is an issuing authority and it is one reliable source of information. But my suggestion the BBFC viewed a PAL (i.e. 4% speedup) checkdisc is borne out by prior experience from other UK companies.

I simply have no reason to doubt the person who replied to my own posts on the Guardian forum. He/she came right back after I had said what a shame I thought the restoration team had apparently not sought out missing material. All this then became a series of replies to correct my own misapprehension. He/she mentioned it took nearly sixmonths of digging to unearth a complete 35mm IB positive reel with the Act 3 material spliced together therein.

Hello davidhare!

Thank you very much indeed for this information!

In the thread about the French AMOLAD there was a post mentioning a comedic ballet-pantomime (performed by Massine) missing from the 124 min. cut. Not sure if this was part of the Antonia story.

A scene of Nicklaus transforming into a muse, urging Hoffmann to devote himself to poetry, was apparently shot and included in "early prints of the film" but has not been rediscovered. Steve Crook discusses this scene in several posts here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044103/board/thread/234154355

In another post in the same thread, Steve Crook mentions "Franz´s dance" restored to Act III. Could it be the comedic ballet-pantomime?

That's the sort of thing he been hearing.

But it's a hell of a coincidence that it's an almost identical running time to the Criterion

Guess here - they sent the BBFC the wrong version.

Steve, the Criterion/Canal disc is 124.47 The 1995 gatefold laserdisc (which I still have) is also 124.47 (But different prints)

The BBFC's quoted 127.38 plus 4% is just under 134.

The whole convsersation with the person from Park Circus/Canal is on the public record, on the same Guardian page as the trailer for anyone to read. Why would this poster be trying to fake a claim?

The screenings begin next month then we know but I have no doubt what he's said is true. The BBFC screened something other than a complete or 24 fps encoded disc.(More correctly 23.976 fps.)

Stefan it sounds like the Massine ballet-pantomime probably occurred in the prologue. It does not appear to have been found or restored. There are probably a few other bits or trims which would have made up a total of four or five minutes along with Massine's mime.

The Guardian poster refers to an aria by Franz (Massine). This is the ballet/pantomime and it occurs in Act 3, the Antonia act, not in the Prologue. The description of the reel that was found all relates to Act 3.

It's actually very common for the BBFC to review the PAL discs when dealing with Dual Format releases. Check any of their recent decisions for DF titles and you'll usually find that the "film" runtime is longer than the "video" runtime.

I have no doubt this release will be as described - it's just a tad confusing.

I've found with the BBFC that any film which newly appears on Blu-ray Disc, and has a new certification, gives the 24fps running time.

Thx for clearing that up. You're the only one here who's seen all this of course!

Hopefully you will be seeing the same version that premiered at the most recent New York Film Festival. Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker introduced the film at the screening I attended, and I can confirm it sounds magnificent and has been beautifully restored. It is truly a one-of-a-kind viewing experience which needs to be seen on a big screen.

I am not familiar enough with the opera to confirm some which of the specific arias and dances have been included, but the closing bows are themselves highly amusing and that sequence definitely runs longer than you would think.
