Greg Berlanti is trying to launch a third live-action hour in the DC television universe that began with "Arrow" and also includes "The Flash". This one would air on the CW's older sibling network, CBS.

Melissa Benoist, who apparently was a series regular on "Glee" after I stopped watching it, has been cast in the title role.

She's a brown-haired actress, very wholesome in vibe, very cute. Not sure if her acting chops can carry a show on her own, though.

She plays/played Marley on Glee, the good girl who was constantly under attack by mean girls. She has a pleasing though somewhat bland presence, so she'll have to step WAY up in class to carry an action show on her own.

Not familiar with the actress. But with all the arcs and soap elements people like these days, Supergirl will be Linda Danvers most of the time. So wholesome and not bringing attention to herself will protect her secret identity.

I hear that she will have a non-super sister who works for the government, and Jimmy Olsen will be in the show, with possibly Superman showing up on occasion. Be great if they could get Dean Cain or one of the Superboy actors, or movie Supermen to play the an older mentoring Superman.

I heard it will not be set in the same "universe" as Arrow/Flash. I had read that they will acknowledge that Superman exists. I would be very annoyed if they didn't.

Don't forget the 4th live action DC character....Constantine. :)

They're obviously eyeing the free-network broadcast-skewed Agent Carter "Chicks watch comic shows...as long as the heroines beat up guys" demographic.

Anything else would have stayed safely in the CW family-business of cross-promoting Arrow and Flash.

But even though the comic's worked hard to make her a more contemporary character and bury the '84 ghosts of Helen Slater and the Razzie Awards, the series will have its work cut out for it.

Helen Slater was an absolutely perfect Supergirl - she just got trapped in a terrible movie.

Not as perfect as the current incarnation, who's more of a modern kick-ass teenager in search of her identity than as Nancy Drew.

Of course, wasn't the Salkinds' fault that comics hadn't gotten their act together in the early 80's, that they were desperately out of touch with DC sensibilities by the fourth movie, or had gotten Jeannot "I'll direct anything, how hard could it be?" Szwarc.

And besides, we've still got that aborted NBC "Wonder Businesswoman" series as the edge of the cliff at how clumsily and shamelessly non-Marvel companies will try to kiss up to their non-comic-reading network demographic that doesn't really care about comic-canon that closely as long as the easy symbol looks good.

Gee, what if it's Man of Steel's Superman universe? Then Supergirl would need to snap someone's neck in the season finale.

(Shh, you'll give Agent Carter ideas!) ;)

Production recently started on the pilot. Glen Winter, one of the revolving directors that DC television has kept in rotation since "Smallville", is directing.

Photo with the new Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and the old Supergirl (Helen Slater) on the set of the pilot:

Ms. Slater has aged very well. She certainly does look like she's in her fifties.

The show's Supergirl costume, designed by Academy Award winner Colleen Atwood:

Overall, I really like it. It's suitably feminine without being overly sexualized. It doesn't look like an off the rack Halloween costume like Adrianne Palicki's God awful Wonder Woman costume for the failed David E. Kelley pilot.

That being said, two complaints:
  • Why the black stockings? Either go bare-legged or go with blue tights/stockings that match the rest of the costume.
  • Why only yellow fringe on the "S" shield? It's really not the complicated; red "S" in a diamond shaped pentagon over a yellow background. I don't see why every recent adaptation feels the need to reinvent the wheel on this.

I will never figure out why they always make these costumes so dark and bland.

It's post-Man of Steel Warner/DC, red and blue always end up looking like bronze and iron.

Someday Warner will fire Zack Snyder, and then the sun will come out again. :(

The colors on her suit are dark, but they're not Man of Steel dark -- thankfully. I do think the bronze substitution for yellow works, but I wish the red was less maroon.

If you de-saturate the color and adjust the brightness in the picture the colors seem more traditional bright red, blue, and yellow and her hair is blonder and her legs look bare or in flesh tone stockings. I hope they film the show brighter and without the dark, color killing, filters..

(The shirt has a lot of seams showing, maybe they were hiding that.)

Colour me so happy to know that Helen Slater will be a part of this project. She will forever occupy a small piece of my childhood imagination thanks to her indelible performance in the original "Supergirl" film. And having Dean Cain aboard is a nice touch as well.

I wish they'd styled her hair more or put some wind on it. This looks more like a screen test than a publicity photo.

It's the new thing. It's not cool unless the costume looks like it has been through an oil spill.
