I recently installed a Yamaha RX-740 with a wired connection to the internet using Verizon FiOS and their Actiontec MI242WR Rev I modem/router. A Belkin DB750N router was connected to a LAN port on the Verizon modem and then a Cat5e cable from the DB750N to the RJ-45 port of the Receiver. Audio streaming from Pandora was robust without any interruption.

Last week I replaced the DB750N with an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) router.

I wanted to turn off the wireless from the Actiontec and configure the AEBS as the sole wireless network and have it assign IP addresses to devices connected to the home network by cable or wireless. Instructions for reconfiguring the MI424WR and AEBS were obtained at http://www.podfeet.com/blog/tutorials-5/how-to-configure-verizon-fios-router-to-give-network-control-to-airport-extreme).The cable from the RJ-45 port was disconnected from the DB750N and connected to a LAN port on the AEBS. When streaming Pandora, the audio stream frequently stalled or froze making it impractical for listening. If the Cat5e cable was connected from a LAN port on the MI424WR modem/router directly to the Receiver, Pandora streamed flawlessly The Pandora connection was stable and worked without any interruptions during the couple of days I searched for a resolution to the issue occurring when connected to the AEBS.

I searched the FAQ's on the Yamaha web site without success. I spoke with Yamaha Tech Support and no one was familiar with the issue I was having. A search of the internet resulted in a couple of interesting posts but nothing definitive. Two calls were made to Apple Tech Support and my issue was brought to the attention of the manager of the group dealing with Airport Express router issues. I explained what parameters I reconfigured and he said to click the NETWORK tab in Airport Utility and change it from "DHCP and NAT" to "OFF (Bridge Mode)", then click update. This resolved the Pandora streaming issue and it has remained robust and stable since.

Below are the AEBS settings being used and procedure if you need to change your settings:

Open the Airport Utility found in Applications >Utilities
Click icon of AEBS, then on the resulting EDIT button in lower right .

Click INTERNET tab; for CONNECT USING: select STATIC
For DNS servers, add 8.8.8.8 on the first line and 8.8.4.4 on the second line.
At bottom center of window, click on INTERNET OPTIONS button:
Configure IPv6: select AUTOMATICALLY
IPv6 Mode: select Native and "Enable IPv6 Connection Sharing" should be checked
Click UPDATE after parameter changes are made

Wireless tab: Enable Guest Network should be unchecked
Click UPDATE if change was necessary

Network tab
Router Mode: OFF (Bridge Mode)
Click UPDATE if change was made
Click Network Options button to view additional parameters:
Enable IGMP Snooping: Unchecked
Block incoming IPv6 connections; Checked
Allow Teredo Tunnels: Unchecked
Allow incoming IPsec authentication
Click SAVE button, then UPDATE button in NETWORK tab window.

A message appears indicating saving of changes will result in network services being temporarily unavailable. When updating begins the status lights in the Airport Utility window next to the Internet and AEBS icons will turn amber and then back to green after the changes have been updated.

Shutdown the Actiontec modem and the AEBS. The RX-A740 can be powered down into STANDBY mode. Restart the network devices (Verizon Actiontec modem/router first.... then the AirPort Extreme. When the AEBS status light is a steady green, choose Pandora. Its audio streaming should now be consistent.
