Ok I am wanting to experiance true 5.1 surround and have tried 2 methods so far. My first attempt was through my graphics card (AMD Radeon HD 5570) hdmi out on my pc to my philips flat screen tv (32PFL4907) and from there to my sony receiver (HT-DDW740) via coaxal digital cable and nothing. My reciever isn't showing me anything hinting that it's recieving a 5.1 signal of course not really sure what I'm looking for all i know is that whatever sound setting I have it on Im not getting any sound whatsover.. My second attempt was to buy a Sony dvd player (DVP-SR210P) which has a coaxal digital out so I plug that directly into my home theaters coaxal digital in hoping that would work but again nothing... Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was playing fantastic 4 which I would think has 5.1 surround..

Nothing goes...

Source->TV->audio system in 5.1(except for the mythical Sony TV)

Have you done any set up in the DVD player? As in...tell it to output 5.1.

How bout you explain to me what exactly you mean by "tell it to do 5.1" and I'll tell you whether or not I've done that lol..

Also, verify the connections to your receiver as shown on page 10 of the manual (bottom portion of graphic).

I've never used that impute mode bottun.. That fixed it, switched it from analog to auto coax or whatever it was but anyways it's working now. For kicks I pulled the coaxil cable out of the dvd player and pluged it back into the back of my flat screen and was able to get sound but it was terrible. I'm thinking my hdmi output on my pc's graphics card only put's out 2 channel stereo and no 5.1 is all I can think. I"ve looked for updated drivers for this and could get anything to work so far.. Thanks very much. True 5.1 surround is awsome I'm loving it. can't wait to watch a movie through it.

Again...

You can't send audio to the TV and then to the AVR and have it be 5.1. Period. End. Of. Subject.

Does the laptop have mini-Toslink?

My desired immediate response is your an idiot (htf expert) but I will repress my desire to do so and ask you some simple questions which would begin with what exactly does avr have to do with 5.1 surround? I really don’t know and it may mean a lot so I’m just asking.. I mean if the technology doesn't support it why do you think it's not a possibility? lol.. I will admit this is not my field of expertise once again but if it was I would have not responded in the manner you have to those that obviously are not as educated in this area as you seem to think you are lol unless of course I was a jackass lol.. :D

There's a couple things happening here... First, as Sam said, your TV will not pass 5.1 sound through to the AVR. It will only output 5.1 from the internal tuner or built in apps.

Second, when you plug in your HDMI, your options change on your computer. Somewhere in your sound setup you will have the option to define the output (playback devices?). You not only have to choose the HDMI output, but you have to tell it how many channels you have (assuming this is Windows PC).

Sam please excuse my post that included the work idiot in it, turns out I'm the idiot so my sincere apoligies (note to self don't reply to forums when had too much to drink) lol.. Anyways ok what I've gathered so far from you 2 sam and david is that the flat screen makes a poor sound hub and thats what my sony recievers (avr) job is so running hdmi to flat screen and then coaxial to sony reciever isn't going to work because my phillips flat screen will not translate from hdmi in to coaxil cable out to reciever.. ok that makes sense. my graphics card on my pc only has dvi, hdmi, vga outs none of which my reciever will take so I guess I'd have to get some kind of splitter to convert hdmi to vidio coaxil in and 2 channel stereo which would defeat the purpose (5.1 surround).. So I guess my only option is to get a sound card with a toslink out or at least optical coaxil out. Unless ya'll have some other ideas? one other question ive went into settings on my hdmi and it only has an option for stereo which I'm wondering is that because my flat screen only has stereo option or is it just that my graphics card only has stereo as an option? I mean if I had a reciever that would take a hdmi cable would my settings on my hdmi on pc change and give me the option for 5.1 surround and do you think I should be upgrading my sony reciever because of no hdmi input options?

Is there a splitter cable that you know of that I could use to make my reciever work being I have no hdmi input on my sony reciever? Something like hdmi to coaxil video split off to digital optical for the sound or something like that?
