Patricia Arquette is a supporting actress in Boyhood? I thought she was excellent but to my mind, she was the female lead of the movie.

I could gripe about them not recognizing Gone Girl (especially when Birdman and The Theory Of Everything got in there) but I do like almost all of the acting nominees.

I agree. How could "Gone Girl" not get a Best Picture nod?

Happy to see WHIPLASH in the list. Did not expect it, but well deserved.

Only two of the eight nominated films played in the city I lived in. Matter of fact, most of those films haven't played within 65 miles of me.

And of course the most maligned film of the year in terms of sound, Interstellar, was nominated for both sound editing and sound mixing.

I thought the expanded Best Picture category was going to try and include more "popular" movies? Oh well, I've heard good things about most of those. The only one I've seen is The Grand Budapest Hotel, which I watched last night on HBO GO and I really enjoyed it, very funny.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, I've seen a non-animated Best Pic nom (Grand Budapest Hotel) and have not seen any of the nominated animation.

As usual, I have seen one of the technical noms (Guardians of the Galaxy).

Surprised that Jake Gyllenhaal didn't get a nod for Nightcrawler. Gone Girl snubbed? Yeah, pretty much. The Hobbit: BOTFA with only one nod? Times have changed since ROTK.

Overall, the only real surprise for me is Marion Cottilard. Never heard of her film.

I've seen all the films in the major categories (except Foreign); have not seen Cotillard's film because it hasn't played in my area.Boyhood;.The Grand Budapest Hotel; and Birdman are my 3 top choices for Best Film, in that order.

I've only seen two of the films nominated: MR. TURNER (4 craft nominations) and THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA (Best Animated Feature). KAGUYA, directed by Isao Takahata, was a very lovely film and, IMHO, superior to Miyazaki's last three movies. I know it won't win but it's my only horse in the race.

I agree with many here that Gone Girl should have been in the BP mix, that and Life Itself not getting the Best Documentary nod it so richly deserved are my biggest disappointments.

Very, very happy to see Whiplash get 5 nominations, all them earned. I believe it will win 3 - Supporting Actor, Editing, and Sound Mixing.

Very happy to see The Grand Budapest Hotel do so well. I love that movie, and, like Joel, I was afraid it maight be forgotten.

The nod for Cotillaird is a huge surprise. I really thought Jennifer Aniston might snag that last slot for Cake. Guess the Academy sees her as a TV actress.

Also surprised at the Miller nod. With 10 potential BP slots I thought the days of a director being nominated but his picture not were gone. The Directors Branch always goes its own way.

Biggest awards dud of the year has to be Unbroken, which was considered a good bet before it premeired, It just never took off. Just three tech nods, including the great DP Roger Deakins with his 12th nomination. Will this be the year he finally wins?

I've only seen half the BP nominees. Still need to see Selma, American Sniper, Birdman & Boyhood.

The lack of a Fiennes-nomination makes me think GBH is likely an also-ran. It'll be Boyhood, with the possibility of a Birdman-spoiler, but that's probably unlikely. In fact, I'd say GBH and Birdman cancel each other out, being quirky theatrical dark comedies as they are, but then, I don't really recall how the weighted ballots work, exactly.

Glad to see Ed Norton on there, hopefully helping to pull him back from career-oblivion.

I predict an Internet shitstorm over the lack of Selma nominations.

Also, you know...I like Bradley Cooper just fine, but he's been nominated three years in a row, now. And after the pretty fucking stellar work Gyllenhaal's done in the last year or two with Prisoners, Enemy, and now Nightcrawler...they really fucked up. "Three-time Oscar-Nominee Bradley Cooper." Get the fuck out of here.
