So I purchased a refurb Denon AVRX1000. 80 watts/channel 8 ohms RMS. I purchased Polk audio TL1 Center,Front, and surround speakers (100 watts 8 ohms RMS). I have only used my equipment for 2 days.(Crossover is set correctly at 120hz and up for my satellites, I have a Polk Audio PSW505 sub to get my low end) Never really listened to music with too high of volume maybe 50-60% max in stereo mode (using my laptop), everything sounded fine for the first day I owned all of my equipment. Front channels sounded clear, crisp, and loud. The following day, I watched a movie with my laptop (audio recording sounded kind of bad from the movie, sounded sort of poppy) I noticed my front left speaker started to sound crackly and scratchy. To check if the speaker was bad, I swapped channels with right speaker channel. Problem still existed in the left speaker. I then swapped back, and used a different speaker wire to be sure the speaker wire wasn't bad. Problem still existed. Then I noticed my right speaker started to sound the same as the left speaker. i then checked the back of my receiver to be sure all of my connections were properly in place. Listening to internet radio, I noticed when wobbling/checking the speaker terminals the music shut off, and the image to my TV shut off for a moment, then came back on (bad solder joints??) Then the volume started to deteriorate in the front channel speakers. It was so bad, it didn't sound anything near like when I first got the unit. I used to be able to listen at decent volume levels in stereo mode (Front L/R channels) and everything sounded great, clear, crisp and loud. Now it just sounds absolutely terrible in stereo mode. When listening to internet radio in Dolby Pro Logic II mode, the center and rear channels work fine. In fact, everything sounds clear and crisp and I can listen at high volume levels with no distortion or clipping (50-60% volume levels). I've used this setting for about 2 days now, and my rear and center speakers still sound fine.

My question is, am I under powering my speakers and is this a reason why they could/did blow? Do I need different speakers? Or, was it bad audio from the movie? I didn't listen to the move at high volume maybe 40% volume at most. Or, was is it something faulty with solder joints? Should I exchange because this receiver is bad?

At this point I could use some guidance on what I should be doing, or at least hoping someone in this forum could give me some insight on what happened. Feeling a little lost here. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Do you have another piece of audio gear to connect the speakers to?

But if you swapped speakers, and the problem stayed in the same spot, that usually means power problem. Not speaker.

Is this Denon new, or a refurb?

This Denon receiver is a refurb. By power problem do you mean that I am underpowering the speakers? Unfortunately I did not have another receiver to hook up the speaker. I figured they were blown, so I sent them in for RMA. I still think it was odd that the audio and video would shut off momentarily when I lightly wiggled the speaker terminal to check for secure connection. (either that or maybe I bumped an HDMI cable by accident :/ maybe I have a bad hdmi cable?)

Or...you found out why the original owner returned the Denon...but didn't bother to mention it had issues.(I've bought open-box stuff at HH Gregg, Amazon and BB. If the original person returning it doesn't say anything...)

In the mean time. Run to Best Buy(even a pawn shop) and get a pair of "something" to test the AVR with.

You are not underpowering the speakers.

Yeah, I think the more I talk with you, the more I think the receiver might be faulty. It is a refurb unit after all. The thing is, it took only like 8-12 hours before both my front speakers went bad (either that or the receiver started going bad.) Or at least I thought so. I think I will just exchange. Wish I had more experience in this sort of thing. I bought this unit from Amazon, but the seller was Accessories4Less. They sell all refurb products. I did buy an extended 3 year warranty with square trade as the refurb unit only comes with a 1 year warranty.

Well I've sent in for a new receiver. I should receive it by Saturday. I will update once I know more.

I did notice that my HDMI cable had a kink in it, which was causing my video connection from my laptop to the receiver to cut out. I replaced that.

When I did swap the left speaker for the right channel and right speaker for the left channel however, the problem remained in the same speaker (Left speaker), which led me to believe the problem was the speaker. Unless the receivers channel damaged the speaker. The volume on both speakers became lower and scratchy. (The right speaker had become worse after I put it in the left channel coincidentally though.) I did get my replacement speakers, but I don't want to hook them up as I am afraid they might get ruined again.
