Questions about TV inputs and set-top box? (1 Viewer)

I have the following TV: http://www.cnet.com/products/sony-klv-s32a10/specs/

I know the specs say it has an HDMI port but there are two variants of the model and mine is the one WITHOUT the HDMI port.

Now I just purchased a new digital TV HD subscription and I thought my provider's set-top box would come with component output. However, it only has composite and HDMI outputs. Set top box specs: http://i.imgur.com/WCaOIIv.png

Since HDMI to Component converters are quite expensive, I thought of going for this product: http://www.snapdeal.com/product/hdmi-male-to-vga-audio/1088732404?utm_source=earth_feed&utm_campaign=7_635&utm_medium=16937391&vendorCode=ae91a5

My question is, would that product be of any use to me?

I think eBay could be your friend. They have HDMI break out cables for less then $10 shipped. Male HDMI plug one end and male component RCA plugs the other end.

Those cables don't work. You see, HDMI uses digital signals while component uses analog signals... Simply using a 'cable' won't convert digital to analog. There are digital to analog converters/adapters available too but they're quite expensive...

I don't think so... Isn't DVI cross-compatible with VGA?
No. DVI (as long as it is DVI-D, which most are...if it has an ATSC tuner) is "HDMI minus audio".

So, if you have DVI, you buy a DVI-HDMI cable, then connect the analog audio.

(There are three flavors of DVI. A, I and D. A might be compatible with VGA. Been a decade since it mattered. D is digital. I is "both")

Nope... no DVI port...How about converting HDMI to VGA? My TV isn't full HD anyway and I only want to watch stuff at 720p... And I've learnt that the TV supports a maximum resolution of 1280x768...

What do you suggest?

Find it hard to believe Sony used the same model number on 2 different TVs.

But, get a different STB. Your provider probably sent that one by default.

I might just do that. But for knowledge's sake, do tell me that if I buy that HDMI to VGA converter, would it work? Why/Why not?

I was a bit surprised with Sony too but it's a 2005 TV...

Probably not. It would have worked a few years ago, but now the studios (and the manufacturers) are forbidding digital to analog conversion for copy protection purposes. Google "analog hole"
